Shark Island (2024)
Another waste of a movie
Another waste of a potentially good movie because the script and screenwriting are just poor. In short, do not expect much from this movie and you won't be disappointed.
The acting was OK, but you can probably see the same quality, or more likely better, at your local play house, and be better entertained. Not that the actors had much to work with after viewing the direction and cinematography .. they were just as bad as the script.
I actually upped this to 2 stars because at least they didn't use an iPhone and the iPhone mic to make the majority of the movie (there are a few scenes that an iPhone may have made it better).
Project 12: The Bunker (2016)
Color me impressed.
Proof that there are good low budget movies out there!
As a streaming movie junkie I have viewed and written a lot of 'low budget' films, and given more than my share of low stars. Thank god I found this one, it has renewed my faith in the industry segment!
OK, the good. FINALLY a pretty solid script. SOO much better than you expect from a low budget film. In fact I thought about 6 stars, but then you are getting into main stream theater level quality, and it was just not quite there. But very close.
The actors actually knew their trade and proved it time and again. I will be watching out for almost the entire cast in the future. They knew how to hold guns, pull off 'stings', everything.
This is one I would highly recommend. Yeah, even for a 2nd tier theater viewing, but probably better for a movie night with some beers and the guys and gals (but not the kiddies).
Nundead (2023)
Just to get on IMDB?
I always try to start with something good to say before I start any critique, but there is nothing here I could use.
Picture a bunch of wanna-bes sitting around a table on a Saturday night, surrounded by empty beer bottles and the like, when someone says, 'let's make a movie'. They rummage around their apartment and find a nun's costume, some chirps up about their iPhone having a great camera (for 2020 that is), they dig up a few other baubles, and then stay up the night writing a barely decipherable script. I am guessing that was genesis for this movie.
The script is barely passable, the acting is not much better, and the camera work, directing, scene setups go down from there.
All in all, avoid. Don't say I didn't warn you.
13 Score (2014)
They actually admit to making this?
Anyone who wants to watch this can help with a simple question: which is worse, the acting or the script? Tough call, I mean REALLY tough.
Sad to, because the camera work and some of the effects weren't too bad. Bud the lines the actors were expected to pull off ... OMG. And yet, they pulled them off about as bad a high school drama class. On second thought, maybe not that well.
I simply can't believe that once they completed this ... project ... and viewed the final product that they actually went ahead an published it? Were they just trying to get their names onto IMDB? Was it really worth it?
Himalaya (2024)
What a load of crudcicles
Where do I start? Let's start with something nice. The quality of the photography is actually nice. But that's all I got,
After that it goes down hill REALLY, REALLY fast. Wow, a found footage movie, how original. Since you didn't have to work that hard on the concept, you could have least tried to make the rest of the movie interesting ... which it wasn't. The script, or at least what I am sure they called a script. I am placing my bet that they did not spend more than a weekend on this. Looking at the direction and the scripted scenes, don't expect much from the acting and you won't be disappointed.
Mind Leech (2023)
Better than nothing ... maybe
This is really a one and a half star movie. The only way to say anything nice about it is to compare it to a true one star movie. The script isn't horrible, but not really watchable.
I guess you could say the same about the acting ... not specifically horrible but not that watchable either. There are a few actors that appear to understand what it takes to make something believable, but they are dragged down by the majority that don't.
The screenplay and camera work isn't high school drama class bad, but it isn't that much better.
I really wanted to give this a chance, especially as there are a few scenes with potential. And I think the cast and crew are trying ... but looking at the finished product that would probably be more of an insult than a compliment.
Toxica (2022)
Another 'artsy' movie plying for ratings
Oh boy, where to start with this one. Credit where do. The acting was better than most for a low budget film. And the script, for all its GLARING holes, actually had a bit of polish ... where it wasn't required to have continuity with other sections. Even many of the scene setups were better than the expected for the budget ... if you can get past the more-than-occassional photography blunders.
That said, this is NOT a movie for that VAST majority of movie viewers that believe 'artistry' is god and the rest can take a back seat. The script is poor at best, again written more from the 'what does it mean' versus a script that people can actually follow.
Actually, it's funny that this tries to be so artsy when the movie completely forgets a basic tenant of the movies ... the 'suspension of disbelief'. Those in the audience that aren't drama coaches are going to be dropping in and out of the movie as they realize there is no continuity of plot nor scenes (a cut on one day is not perfectly healed the next).
If you are sitting around in your French beret having just come from a poetry reading you might like this. The rest of us should stay FAR away.
Ghost Planet (2024)
Giving a 'meh' rating would be overly nice.
Ok, credit where due first. Not bad CGI ... then again even for a budget film you had better be able to pull that off in 2024! The staging was acceptable and the camera work showed some promise, but wasn't really there , especially when they had to meld the live with the CGI..
And this is where I diverge from a bunch of reviewers that either only reviewed one or two movies (hmmm, friends and family?) or someone that rates EVERYTHING a 10. (Really? Just stop the BS.)
The script does not even garner a 'meh'. Not only can you tell there is no polish, it sounds like an original write that never went through ANY thoughtful review. The acting was stiff as a 2x4. Did they even feel the parts, because I got nothing. And lastly, as someone with a modicum of science knowledge your premises, descriptions, and implementation IN A SCI-FI FILM where laughable at best. Ever hear of the concept 'suspension of disbelief'? This film failed.
I prayed for a 3 star performance, but it never gets there.
And yeah, I docked another point to offset a bunch of reviews filled with complete crud.
Judas Ghost (2013)
A renewed faith in Low Budget films
As someone that has given probably more than my share of 1 and 2 stars, I am truly impressed. I can see where some would consider this a 'stage' production as it does almost solely happen in a single small location, but this team made it work beautifully.
This team checked ALL the boxes. My biggest peeve, the script, was very, very, good. The lines were dead on. But I must admit I think it got a little weaker as the movie went on ... I hope the writer wasn't hoping to rely more on the effects? The acting was on point. I will be keeping an eye out for several of these actors in the future. The staging, directing, and camera work were SPOT ON.
You definitely need to give this a watch.
Demonoids from Hell (2023)
Another cell phone movie
Yeah, another group of wanna-bees that must have been sitting around on a Saturday night thinking 'let's make a movie'. They should have had more to drink so they would not have remembered this idea the next morning. It seems like the script was written by whomever had the least to drink so they could actually read it the next morning, and the one that drank the most won the right to be the director.
OK, no body wants to listen to a movie where you had to use the microphone of the cell phone.
Ooh, and the monsters are ... hand puppets? Yeah, really. Don't believe me? So hate your life you need to waste another hour? Be my guest. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Ravenstein (2020)
What a waste of time
Looks like another student project.
Well credit where due. It was another movie where you spend the entire time in the dark, but they actual had enough lighting so you aren't constantly trying to se what's going on. OK, that's the good.
The bad of course starts with the script. Not 1 star bad at least. Seems like they started with a decent enough concept and may have spent a whole week working on it. Spend another week or two next time ... amateurish would be an understatement. And many of the scene setups could use a LOT of work.
The next obvious is the music ... hey, sound boy, trying putting the music volume IN BALANCE with the movie. WAY too freaking load.
And the camera work is as terrifying as the movie wanted to be. CONSTANTLY tipping this way then that. Probably got dropped a full letter grade or more on that.
Legend of Hell (2012)
Would've. could've, should've
Not a bad concept, but then the writer and director got involved and it went downhill from there.
But lets start with the cinematography. Some of the shot setups and effects are sophomoric at best. Yeah, I understand this is a low budget film, but that does not excuse poor decisions.
As to the writing, wow. Some of your plot devices and setup are absolutely pitiful and make no sense. I loved (sarcasm) 'dusting' off a parchment like its a dinosaur fossil. Really? ... that how you want the story to proceed? Have you never heard of the concept of 'suspension of disbelief' and what happens when you disrupt this with just plain stupid?
Sad too, I think the actors actually wanted to make something of this, although a few have acting skills no better than high school drama class. Harsh, you bet, because everyone involved suffered because of things that could easily be fixed, like spending more time creating a good script and taking time to setup quality scene.
They See You (2022)
2 stars is too generous
OK, credit where credit is due. There may have been one or two actors that took have potential and may have a future. And ... I got nothing else, sorry.
The script is horrible, only surpassed by the directing and the photography. ... and maybe the sound. The stages weren't all that great either.
In general, there was no attempt to put any polish on this whatsoever. The scenes are crude, without any attempt to add any depth. The lines, although occasionally something you might actually say in real life, were poorly delivered. Sometimes almost mechanically, and other times way to 'drama class-ish'.
I would like to say 'go back and try again ', but I don't really want to think about what a sequel from this crew would look like.
Arctic Armageddon (2023)
Not a clue among the entire crew
I almost gave this a 3 star, even hoped for a 4, but that was just the first five minutes of the movie. After that it was clear that everyone associated with this movie is clueless in their role. I only gave a 2 because a very few actors and the camera work was worthy.
Where to start?
The script is AWFUL. Not only the words, but the staging (the director takes responsibility for some of this also), the events and responses, everything. And the actors, could you be more stiff? Admittedly I would have had a hard time delivering those lines knowing how awful the script was.
Throughout the movie the viewer constantly loses attention, wondering why they do/say what they did, events/actions that don't make sense, places that don't look real, often don't even look like they fit.
And whomever was responsible for stages (writer, director, and production team) find other jobs. One example, and my biggest gripe (of many)... have you never seen a submarine movie?
A little advice, look up the term "suspension of disbelief". Its key to the art.
Dark Matter (2014)
They tried?
Credit where credit is due. First, go in knowing this is a LOW/NO budget movie. The plot ... meh. Same for the script, although a t least it appears there was one as it doesn't appear that the actors were ad lib'ing constantly (like some low/no budget movies).
So really this was a one star movie, but again, give credit where earned. The acting was slightly better, almost believable. It appears they may have actually used better equipment, and not the iphone they just bought.
Sadly, the movie uses some time honored crud for these movies, like nudity. Necessary, not really. It would have been better to up the scripts and spend more time polishing the scenes.
Apocalypse Warrior (2022)
Its not that bad, its worse.
So this is what a .... 'movie' ... looks like without a script. Was there any part of this that was not ad lib'd? Were any of the shots actually practiced first, or was this a one take movie?
Don't expect much. This almost looks like a drama class project that was developed and shot in a weekend. Not sure what they though they were accomplishing, besides getting their names on IMDB, which this and other videos like this proves anyone can.
At least they used relatively better equipment than most no budget films, maybe even a separate mic (instead of the one on the iphone). But that hardly makes up for acting that wouldn't get them onto a community theater stage.
Serenity Farm (2014)
Give credit where its due
Upfront honesty ... this is 2 star movie, but you have to give credit where credit is due, and viewers can expect something ... maybe a little better. Give it a shot.
Concept, actually pretty good.
Acting: viewers can expect that a couple of key members of this cast really tried. Not just the "can I get my name on IMDB" tried, but the "this is my calling" tried ... even though this isn't the greatest production.
Otherwise this is your usual low budget film. Don't expect perfection, but be somewhat pleased.
Back to the concept ... if anyone on the cast is reading this PLEASE remember that one of the cheapest ways to make a better movie is through the script. And you were given a decent start, so spend the extra effort and possibly some backing to significantly increase the polish, and you might really have something.
Eden Prime (2022)
No, just no.
I was about to just blow off reviewing this movie without a review but I can't do that to those that come after me. This is something that should NEVER have been created, much less published
Think about the graphics from your very first video game you ever saw or heard about, like the original 1990's DOOM. Now make the graphics, dialogue and lack of a script about 5 times worse. And you still have something better than this movie.
The only thing I can think is that the only 3 people involved with this atrocity were desperate to get an IMDB entry. Well now they have it. Then again, those entries are associated with this movie, so they did not come out ahead.
Saurians 2 (2023)
For lack of a camera on your phone ...
I always feel that you need to give credit where due ... but I couldn't find anything good here. This had to a be a hoax, something they thought up while drinking too many beers one night. The first obvious thing you see is the camera quality, or lack thereof. And this isn't a movie from the turn of the century, this was recent. Wow, real bad choice. You can't get past the stiff acting, if that's what you want to call it. I have seen better acting from younger actors in community theaters. This 'film' should not exist on any platform, even the cheapy streaming services. The only thin I can think is the actors wanted to get an IMDB page. Well you got one, and it is associated with his film. Probably would have been better to stay anonymous.
Despiser (2003)
Its nice to have friends to pad your movie rating
I probably don't have to say anything, just read the other reviews yourself. All the limitations of a no-budget movie, but I'm going to give it a 10??? Really? Man, doesn't James Cameron feel stupid. He spent over $200M on Avatar and he is still short of a 8 star rating. You would think Despiser is PHENOMINAL? ... or the friends and robots are just phenomenal at padding the freak out of IMDB.
Well the other reviews were right, this is a really no-budget film. And sadly, the things that are essentially FREE when you are a low/no budget film, this crew could not get right, like a good script and decent directing and scene setup. Please, I might have given a 2 star, if just for the effort. But for all those that pad up, we have to have a few that pad down.
The Dead Matter (2010)
Not much of a script, but a lot of friends
Looked interesting and even had some potential talent on the listing. It should have been good but the script was completely awful. The directing and many of the scene setups weren't much better. Another movie bites the dust because the writer and director can't take the time to make it right. I'm not talking about spending money, just time and preparation, which often if not always do not require actors or other costs.
But this doesn't make sense. It has a ton of 10 star and 8 star ratings??? ... and yet a ton of 1 and 2 star. Hmm something is not right here. Look at that , so many of the high ratings were given by reviewers that only reviewed a single movie: this one! Nice to have a big family and circle of friends. And I hate bogus ratings.
The Elp; A Creature of Legend (2022)
Just no ...
Really, just no.
Well, trying to stay with the 'always say the nice things first', at least it appears they used the newer iPhone to make this movie. The picture and voice recordings are better than other movies also obviously made with a phone and of this ... quality. And some the actors seemed to be trying, kinda.
Beyond that, oh brother. I've seen better acting in the community theaters. I'm sure they had a plan of some sort. The only thing worse than the script is the directing. The scene setups, if you can call them that, are amateurish at best. And that's the best thing I can say about the directing.
Well, at least the cast members now have an entry in IMDB, for what it's worth.
Alien Apocalypse (2023)
Start with a dose of stupid, add a pinch of you gotta be kidding ...
I agree this is presented in a throwback style, if you call throwback meaning to setup many scenes you have to start with a good dose of stupid and let the actors react with more stupid (like some of the old sitcoms). Yeah, I didn't think they were entertaining back then and I still don't. A few minutes or rewriting could have made SUCH a difference. I guess drama 101 classes have been forgetting to teach the basic 'suspension of disbelief' concept, because there is no way the writer and director made it to the 102 class, unless they decided to sleep through it. Sad too because a few of the actors showed promise, but its tough to see that when you recoiling in horror at the script/scenes, instead of the movie.
Ghost Note (2017)
And the voting bots are at it again.
Wow, almost 600 votes from Argentina, Aruba, and Armenia, all at 7 stars or 8 stars (depending on the location) with no other ratings from those locations. And less than 200 other votes. Someone on the cast or crew has a computer savvy friend.
Sad, because this crew had potential. Some of the actors/acting was ok, even good, but as noted in the other reviews there a several cast members that should probably look into other careers. Not the greatest story, the writer could tighten up SEVERAL places, and the directing/transitions need some help. All-in all, a 3 might be pushing it.
And sorry, I HATE vote bots anywhere, so I am giving this a 1 star to pull the rating back into reality. Yeah, friends and family always sandbag the rating, but rarely enough to make a difference, and definitely not for 600 votes!
Alien Nemesis (2023)
Not good, but not quite horrible either.
Huh, interesting. One of those REALLY low budget films. A few of the actors appeared to have talent, and the behind the camera and cgi work seemed okay for the price. I really did want to like this and hoped for better, but it was just not a pleasant watch. The directing was cheesy at best, as was the script. The scene setups and transitions were something I would expect from a community college drama student, and just could not hold the viewers attention. All in all, the writer and director need to spend a LOT more effort, even for a low budget film. Not something to ding the cast and crew over, but this movie just does not warrant anything better than a 2 star.
