Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Cringeworthy
From the inspid kiwi accent to the cartoony graphics, this is a true HORROR story. In that it's horrible.
Dear Lord, when are we going to grow up and demand something more than this drivel?
I'm not wasting time with more on this. I simply want to vent my disapproval in the diminishing hope that others may add to some kind of movement to encourage or demand better movies.
The fx were pathetic and the action mindless and clumsy.
The Paradine Case (1947)
Poor man's "Witness for the Prosecution"
Pretty disappointing actually.
The script was thin and much of the principal acting seemed forced and predictable. A bit like explaining punchlines.
Peck wasn't ideal and the promise of his astuteness was never realised.
Laughton was terrific but wasted in the role of the judge.
It was okay. But just okay.
Poseidon (2006)
WHY
Is it too simple just to say that obviously nobody in Hollywood can come up with a new idea anymore?
Or perhaps they believe that the public have an unending appetite for action movies regardless of whether they are new or remakes?
Either way one thing is certain. Personally I am sick of it. I just watch this movie for the first time, perhaps because it's in the middle of the day and caught my attention. What a let down.
WandaVision (2021)
NOPE
Conjured up from scratch I might understand the attraction but to do this to Wanda and the Vision, nope. Insulting. Comics were better when they had an underground following. Too many mainstream Johnny come lately's now who dont get the tradition. .
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Absolutely fantastic
This movie proves that modern comedy can be absolutely endearing, charming and funny without being crass vulga or base.
A lot of credit has to go to the actors in this one.
The Kiwis really know how to laugh at themselves and the cast carried it off to perfection.
I've watched it four times now and laugh as hard and enjoy it as much as I did the first time.
Hollywood take note: this is how it's done.
You used to be good at comedy. "Uncle Buck" was endearing without being disgraceful like the buffoon in "hangover".
The bad guys in "home alone" will bed but not cruel. just like the "bad guys" in this movie.
Great stuff congratulations on a wonderful production.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
SHATTERED
Why are the movie studios hell bent on convincing me I should've given up my love of comic books when I "grew up"?
Happily I remain loyal as I grew old but not "up".
The studios however, continue to pump out embarrassing parodies of my favourite heroes perhaps because they aren't directed by true fans. They're aiming at a market that seems willing to swallow the swill they peddle so long as it's got heaps of explosions and mindless action for action's sake.
Dear God it's horrible.
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Wonderful
Strap me to a chair and I can literally watch this movie once a week.
It's funny, it's got a great story, the greatest dancer in history (Kelly) O'Connor who could match it with him, nearly, and Jean Hagen who nearly stole the show.
Timeless Magic which thumbs its nose at modern moviemaking.
The Russia House (1990)
Nope
I couldn't get past the background music.
Pompous script. Ordinary story.
Your Honor (2020)
Nope
The son is an annoying wimp.
Why is a judge's son driving a wreck?
Love Cranston but this is a sad effort to replicate the magic of BB.
It's ok but just.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
Stellar
This show has single-handedly restored my faith in TV as a medium.
The only question in my mind is, why didn't this creative team produce, direct and star in the most recent films?
Sheer magic!
The Art of Skiing (1941)
Love it
The yodel and Goofy's shriek as he careens out of control is worth watching this all on its own.
I can't help myself. I lose it every time.
If this wasn't Colvin, it sure sounded like him.
Great stuff.
The Major Lied 'Til Dawn (1938)
FANTASTIC
I love the Wowsers who can't help but see the PC side of everything.
This toon was funny, a tone capsule and Warner's at their best.
The orchestra was at their best in this one.
A beloved cartoon from my childhood and streets ahead of the moronic muck that kids watch now.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 13: The Jedi (2020)
THE FASTEST HOUR ON TELEVISION
The series generally is so far superior to the movie sequels, it beggars description.
It captures the best elements of classic Star Wars with minimal PC.
I love it.
Unhinged (2020)
Russell was good but.......
Started out great despite the typical dysfunctional American family situation. No wonder Biden got elected.
Quickly degenerated into stupidity, overblown nonesense and a typical formulaic catch phrase punchline.
Not even Russell could save it.
America; you are doomed.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 10: The Passenger (2020)
BETTER THAN THE MOVIES
Fantastic entertainment. Ru is ent if the best if the early movies.
Mirage (1965)
Overrated
The premise was quite good but I think many reviewers see the movie through the strength of the cast rather than the odds and ends that pull it back. I think casting is where it fails.
I've never liked Matthau. He played this role strangely. I find nothing magnetic about him or his portrayal.
Gregory Peck was miscast. A good looking man but lacking athleticism which was required for this role.
There were lots of illogical things done and decisions made that reduced the credibility for me of should have been a terrific pic.
The Holiday (2006)
Very easy to watch
Not a fan necessarily of the genre mainly due to the fact that Hollywood can't do these as well as they used to.
This one however was easy to like mainly because the four principles were.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
One for dr_foreman
Politically incorrect??!!! Are you kidding.
14 years ago you wrote that and I just read it today. It's such an idiotic remark and so typical of the stupid times we live in that I just had to tell you so - 14 years later. Dear God that's lame.
I'm ashamed of the generation or environment that bred your sad naïveté. PC is seeing the death of us and the US is leading the race to oblivion because of mentality like yours.
Pathetic.
Ratched (2020)
syd9907. HER NAME IS RATCHED!!
Psychedelic, cartoonish and pointless.
Very disappointing.
Borderline (1950)
COULDN'T GET PAST THE FORST MUSICAL NUMBER
Claire Trevor la la la-ing in the chorus line during that first musical number was too much. Turned it off. Watched that bit on YouTube so it cost me nothing but the therapy to get it out of my head. Horrific.
As to the rest of the movie, I'll leave that to others.
Superman: Red Son (2020)
21st Century propaganda
Here we go again.
Never read the graphic novel because I'm a comic fan. I'll let the irony sink in.
Comics are now just vehicles for agendas. Feminism in this case and not the healthy version. I turned it off after the "pathetic man aren't you?" Line.
Hideous.
As to the artwork. Yeesh. The backgrounds are sterile and lifeless As they all are nowadays - in the west at least. . The animation Is horrible and the anatomy and line work is thin and out of proportion.
A dead loss. Comics should have died out around 1990 before reality and gadgets ruined them. I hate you for what you've done to the art form.
Split Second (1953)
SORT OF KEY LARGO IN THE DESERT
McNally is a real psycho and Smith is despicable.
I really enjoyed this movie. Not perfect by a long shot but one that slipped under my radar until now.
Richard Egan is always worth watching.
Evil (2019)
LOVE IT
This is going to upset a few reviewers but I LOVE THE FOUR DAUGHTERS. It's so natural.
Normally I'd avoid noisy brats like the plague but there's a charm it's hard to nail down.
Howard Hawkes and Christian Nyby perfected the multiple conversations at once in "The Thing from Another World" and this has that same quality.
The show's great. Everyone is likeable. Even Leland. This has reignited, just slightly, my faith that Hollywood can still do horror without filth and blunt tackiness.
The Little Giant (1933)
I LOVE E.G. BUT....
Playing an idiot in a "fish out of water tough guy in society role", does not suit the star.
His strength was in his rapier sharp mind and sardonic manner which isn't in evidence here.
The sequence on the polo pony is cringeworthy.
Still, it's E.G. so I give it a 5. The ending saves it.
No spoilers. Check it out.
The Vikings (1958)
A LESSON FOR MODERN FILM MAKERS
Little to no special fx. No four letter words. Little to no sex yet the visceral qualities of the barbarian came across loud and clear.
They don't make em like this any more, more's the pity.
