Ghostbusters (2016)
Trashy, cash grab - no substance. Ghostbusters is terrible.
I went in thinking I'd like this and an open mind keeping the SJW crap foremost in my mind.
This movie is hands down awful.
The writing is poor. There is no interesting character villain. There are no interesting male characters, and the femaile characters are cartoony and fall flat. The jokes, guys the jokes 80-90% of them simply NOT funny. This has nothing to do with the all-female cast there are talented people there. There are. But the movie doesn't work, they fall completely flat. They are are all stereo- types and not interesting ones.
Yes its Ghostbusters, yes there are some interesting visuals but if you're expecting some intelligent humor here, like the 1980 Ghostbusters movie - prepare for disappointment. The first funny joke is a fart joke (female fart joke). Thats right, you heard me.
Where there were funny looking and interesting Ghosts in the previous Ghostbusters, this movie we have boring ones which actually kill people. People die in this movie. There is a bodycount here. What were they thinking?
This literally is an insult to the Ghostbusters license. This could have been a good movie, but what we have here is neon-in-your- face, rattling keys in your face, catering to idiots; you are being treated like your an idiot.
Do not see this movie.
The Runner (2015)
Not a good movie.
Nothing interesting happens in this movie, nothing. It opens with some BP Oil disaster nonsense and the aftermath of what happened to communities etc. with Cage playing a Congressman doing what he can for them. Unfortunately Cage's character is a bit flawed, but this is hardly shown in an interesting way whatsoever, and a later scandal happens its actually hard to understand what the big deal was. The editing is terrible, the story is boring, the plot is poorly executed, not that there is one really as nothing interesting happens at all. The wife is a boring character, in fact, I'd say there are NO interesting characters in this movie whatsoever. Now, I do actually like Cage in certain movies, he can act really maniacal at times which is what we love him for etc. but here any 'actor' could have taken this role and done just as well. This is a slow moving, bore-fest. Even the music is bad. I'd say the direction was spot on, if the tone of this movie was meant to put you to sleep. Give this one a miss.
Last Knights (2015)
Tame Fantasy
Here we have a tame and traditional knights and castle movie, nothing is done overly well but it is a decent enough movie with some minor political machinations and a small side story none of which add much; the larger scope which motivates this movie is lost. A dark world, with grim characters and no interesting stories even on the main character though a dark past was suggested we find nothing about it. The fight scenes are well choreographed but the lack of blood and gore, of the stark brutality which we've gotten used to, is not in this movie. Other movies have done this on a much grander scale such as Gladiator or indeed, 300 though the fight scenes are passable. I wouldn't call these fighters 'knights' as they act more like ninja at times but this might have something to do with the world they exist in as portrayed in this movie. I do not like Clive Owen as an actor, though he does a good job here this movie just plods along in places, I kept waiting for something interesting to happen but it nearly doesn't until the very end; but even though it does come together I wouldn't pay money to see this in a movie theatre. There is no high drama here, I'd say if this was an afternoon movie on TV you would be well rewarded for watching this but another HBO TV show does this on such a grander scale that one might grow bored with what is presented here. There are some long shots done for effect, but the musical score did nothing for me but I understand what the director was trying to do, create an emotional point. Perhaps there are too many of them. This movie tries too hard to be something that it's not. The simplified political backdrop we have no interest in as there is little perspective that sheds light on the bigger picture, though it is alluded to and forms an important part to what motivates the Knights we just have no interest in it because we end up knowing little about it. There seems to be elements of Asian culture, adding something to the costumes and decor, to the sense of honour perhaps which is fine. Again, nothing really stands out here, but nothing is really bad either. It's just 'tame' in setting, in scope, in characterization; there aren't even any interesting female characters. Worth a watch, but quickly forgotten.
The Lazarus Effect (2015)
Really good and frightening horror!
Well what can we say about this movie except a very excellent movie, it really held my attention after the first 30mins. It reminded a little of Flatliners but much creepier. The camera angles, weird lighting, somber but electrifying music, the ideas presented, the acting and direction were all spot on. Olivia Wilde is amazing in this movie, turning from a sweet girl into something else by the end. This movie demands a sequel. There are some really twisted ideas presented here, and it's done in a very alarming way. For me anyway, this had me transfixed on the idea and what was happening. It felt very claustrophobic but I liked it. There were some really weird scenes cascading into some montages, I hope they flesh out more of the story with another one. It certainly left much to the imagination, the supporting actors were all good, I didn't find anything amiss though the relationships were a bit rushed in places. I really enjoyed the ending, it was a bit chilling. Watch this movie. I score it high because of how it held my attention, especially with some of the ideas that were shown however it is abstract but thats what makes it good. A well thought out, and alluding to some strange ideas about death and the after life, religion takes a back seat here there is no exorcism or anything it is a woman's spiral down a very dark hole that I found interesting. I'd watch it again, but its too chilling and to me thats a good horror movie.
Bad Turn Worse (2013)
Slow Moving Boring Drama
Well I don't know whose rating these movies so high but must be someone involved with the production and on IMDb. Pathetic.
One of THE worst movies I have seen this year, couldn't wait for it to end.
Simple plot - boy steals money, no reason why, spends the money stupidly in some bars (not the real underworld mind you) and nothing amis here just some frat boys handing out in a country bar.
Nothing happens in the middle of the movie, it's a love triangle. Anytime its 2 dudes and a girl, love triagle presumed. Well this one doesn't disappoint.
Bad dudes are non-existent in thie movie, so is acting generally - mostly just sitting around and boring dialogue.
Who rates this piece of crap 6+
Give your head a shake, one of THE worst movies I have ever seen.
The Scribbler (2014)
Very good alternative perspective movie..
Surprisingly well written dialogue, very good character development on main character, nudity/sexuality appropriate for the scenes and help to develop the story (not to mention the hot babes), small appearance by Sasha Grey she did well, strange ending but all comes together. Good soundtrack, visuals, supporting cast no issues here.
A dark and gritty movie. melo-dramatic throughout and interesting ending, unexpected ending.
Choreographed fights scenes were well done.
There are good transitions between scenes as well, as there is a minor sub-plot that is fleshed out. If you like Sucker Punch or Fight Club you'll probably enjoy this one.
Spot on and a must see if you like alternative non-traditional story telling, nothing bad about this movie at all and found it entertaining.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Horrible Clichés Just Another Piece of ..Crap
Well this movie has elements of interest, we are all interested in what world we may leave for our children, if you have any, or what will persist once we die but this movie really, is just ridiculous and preys upon 'global warming' issues. These issues are important but this movie speeds up the timeline by 100x so that events that should take 100s if not 1000s of years all happen in the space of 25-50mins, not to mention we have a lovely teenager and a girl or wait I got that backwards, whatever, two Jews that happen to be rich and wealthy and well, there is your love story; meanwhile the few black people or other characters are just pushed to the side. CGI special effects, based up on a poor opening story (sorry if you are a black dude/gang banger/Latino/Chinese/ or any other ethnic group - yes gang bangers are an ethnic group, you don't belong here). Very little merit to this film, even toasting a soccer team - really? Thats all they thought of. One of the worst disaster movies out there.
Lucy (2014)
Best Movie Of 2014
Well all I can say about this movie is it impressed me to no end, Luc Besson pulled it off yet again with a likable anti-hero type that despite all forces working against her well, I won't spoil it but Scarlett Jo did a wonderful job portraying this character.
Only hitch I found were the 'bad guys' that were annoying and I only partially understand why they were a continued threat; some other plot device could have been used to drive the story (CIA, FBI, NASA, NSA, CSIS - anything really) - something that would really give governments a cause for concern is someone with powers such as Scarlet Johansson obviously had so except for the stereotyped mafia types chasing throughout the movie everything else was strong.
I really enjoyed the philosophical moments, a quiet moment early on when Lucy calls a loved one - the technologies that were displayed, the visuals, the music and score.
I really think this was a strong effort and well, we'll have to see if this becomes a Trilogy.
I gave this movie a 9/10, if more attention had been paid to the broader scope someone like Lucy would pose a threat to world governments and ALL forces would therefore make efforts against her I think that would have set the stage for some really fantastic stand-offs. What we got was OK, but not great as it was a bit too simplistic for what was happening in other parts of the movie near the end.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Terrible popcorn movie
Well here we are again, another poor script and though plot was well executed and CGI was fine - they got what they wanted here, apes with machine guns on horses (it's in the trailer) I found this movie boring and not really in the spirit of the series. James Franco is missing from this movie, I wanted to see more Franco/Caesar dialogue the new cast are just one- dimensional fluff pieces, and completely forgettable. The first 30mins of this movie I found a complete yawn, I found it unlikely some plot devices actually happened (really? take an already violent human into the ape camp? why? does anyone know his name or what he brought to the group really?) and does Hollywood really think we're that stupid?
I guess so.
Compared to the original movies, with their confusing and complex plots, diverse characters (even though they were mostly apes), sub-plots abounding between religious caste and military caste not least to mention Charlton Heston's confusion about what planet he was even on - time travel movies or anything related to paradox is very hard to pull off, yet it was done with NO CGI and somewhat simplistic costumes (ground-breaking for it's time though).
No, what we have here is a simply violent adaptation and I was sorely disappointed as a result. I found the story bad, the script poorly written with no meaningful characters on the human side of the equation - possibly the most important, Andy Serkis was strong - but no one else was. Gary Oldman was the lone human stand out - but one person cannot pull an entire movie from a bad beginning, unless your Tom Hanks and you're stuck on an island.
For entertainment this movie earns 1 point, for CGI also 1 point and Andy Serkis performance again 1 point. The rest of it is complete garbage, ALL the starting characters we see (the first 30 minutes of the humans - the ones that visit the ape camp) are completely forgettable.
3/10. Pathetic really, this is all they can come up with 170m?
Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
Worst Movie Of 2014
OK, so I just finished watching this piece of crap. It took me 2 days to finish watching it, from the bad lighting, bad dialogue, boring plot, pedantic characters and just a lack of anything interesting happening I'd say this is THE worst movies of 2014. It also features music from the iconic 60s band THE DOOORS. In a horror movie. Several songs, one being 'break on through' probably referring to Aldrus Huxley's Doors of Preception and otherworldliness or window to another dimension. In any event, the music used at critical moments ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. The music is just obnoxious and has no place in this movie. Eric Bana is fine, though he had little to do even in the end, this movie features the usual silly scare tactics (noises off-screen, flashing images of gore which went unexplained, rampant darkness, foolish instances of characters being left alone without any reason behind it - I suppose to create tension, lack of any defining tension throughout the movie etc). It's as though, this movie didn't know what it wanted to be and fluctuated between police tracking suspects through to exploring dark basements, in fact everything in this movie appeared either at night or when it was raining or both - just uninteresting overall. In the end this movie tries to be a possession type movie though the priest is a nobody and miscast completely, nearly no chemistry at all with Eric Bana. Just bizarre. Absolutely one of the worst movies of 2014. Why people are scoring this movie higher is beyond me. I gave it, a 1/10 and that was being generous. I actually registered an account just so I could write this review I was so annoyed by this movie.
