His Dark Materials (2019)
Great quality, wonderful adaptation
I read the books as a kid, and fast-forward ~15 years and I just wrapped up the series. There were many things I did not remember (most of them in Season 3), but I remembered the general idea and the ending. And I've got to say, it's an amazing adaptation. I even went to the internet to find out that many of the things I did not remember did actually happen in the books. The casting was great, Mrs. Coulter is the best adapted character, and Dafne Keen performs a great job as Lyra. Here, once more, HBO shows how good they productions are.
I am unsure if this series is as enjoyable as it is if you haven't read the books, but if you're into fantasy, it is definitely worth a watch. For me, it was a great trip to my teenage.
Fleabag (2016)
I didn't laugh at all, but I still enjoyed it
Perhaps it is not my cup of tea in terms of humour. It is definitely that kind of "english humour" that doesn't make me laugh at all. And I do understand many people don't find it funny.
But despite of that, I still enjoyed the history, the characters, the 4th-wall breaking, the acting was incredible in all of them... I wouldn't just say "it is a comedy" - maybe there are some tones of dark/cynical story with some bits of drama (particularly in the season 1). And a bit of a love story in the season 2.
As the show is not that long (only 12 episodes, with a runtime of 30 minutes), it can be watched in a whole afternoon.
Amazing writing and acting from Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Fan Service makes half of the movie
The plot:
Mario and Luigi are 2 brothers that work as plumbers, who accidentally travel to another dimension, through a green pipe, and end up in the Mushroom world, which is in Danger due to the gigantic turtle Bowser, who wants to marry the prince Peach from the fungus world.
That is the basic idea of the plot. I guess for kids, it is ok - it has fun, colors, animated fights, simple jokes, action, and all that. The movie es very fast paced, and lots of things happen in the ~1.40 length of the movie.
For adults, it is full (I mean: full) of references to the whole franchise, from the oldest NES games to the latest versions in the newest shiny consoles.
I think for the grown ups, the movie must be boring if you haven't played Mario, nor know too much about it. For those who have, nostalgia plays a lot, showing again how powerful nostalgia can be when selling experiences.
Having said all that, I had a blast seeing many Mario characters around here and there, or listening to all the FX sounds that reminded me of being a tiny human playing in my NES console, something as simple as Mario jumping on a turtle. Or losing a Power-Up. I gotta admit, they did a good integration of the game mechanic into a movie.
They knew they target audience, and they played well. If you remove all of that, it is just another generic animated movie.
FLCL Grunge (2023)
It's not that bad
The animation is odd, or at least I didn't like it too much. I'd rather see a drawing style similar to the previous versions.
The story itself doesn't make too much sense... in a similar style to the OG series. Perhaps it could have a bit more nonsensical humor, but all in all, it has some of the original style. The music by the Pillows is good, although some songs are from the past series, and there isn't a memorable new song, as many of the first series were (or "Thank you, my Twilight" for the 2nd season). But at least is nice to hear some of the classic songs. I do have to say that they are mostly background and are not a priority though.
Some of the positives are the way the 3 chapters told the story for each character and their interconnections. Although you don't get enough time to feel sympathetic or root for a particular one, I think they did an interesting approach.
Nahir (2024)
Not bad acting, but that's it
The actors do a good job, they made me believe they were from a small town (not a big city). Particularly, Nahir was very similar to what I remember from the real one. However, that's the only good thing from this movie.
The editing was very weird: the movie jumps in different timelines but not always tells you when that happens (sometimes you're shown the year, but other times you're not), leaving you to guess when things are going on. Some minor plots are barely touch (which makes no point in showing them), and the writing of the plot is kinda awful. There are some background music scenes that do not match the atmosphere of the moment in the movie they're played.
If you knew nothing about the real case, the movie is definitely confusing as to what really happened.
El vendedor de ilusiones: El caso Generación Zoe (2024)
An unbelievable documentary that left some things out
I remember living this while it happened through Twitter. The whole story was unbelievable, every time something happened it was even more funnier than before. It took place during ~2 years, particularly during the COVID pandemic. It generated tons (and I mean: tons) of memes because how weird, unexpected and fanciful the whole story was.
This documentary tells the story of Cositorto, a salesmen + preacher who created Generation Zoe, a Ponzi scheme across many countries in Latin America, and even in some countries in Europe.
While all the crucial points of the story are there, I felt like there could have made a better job explaining more about the promises made to deliver money and some of the supposed business Generation Zoe was investing in. While the most important are there, others were left out.
There are some witnesses telling their stories, how they got into it, how they got out (if they did), and even interviews from Cositorto itself.
I had a great time, lots of memories came in, but I felt that if you didn't know anything about the story, it wouldn't be that great. I watched it with my girlfriend and I had to add some clarifications or explanations for some points of the story.
Six Feet Under (2001)
It gets better and better as you watch
What a series. What a last season. What a finale!
I started watching it without knowing too much about it, I just knew from hearing about it a few years ago that it was one of those "Amazing HBO series" and that it was about a family owning a funeral home.
The actual "plot" is indeed about a family-owned funeral home in which the father of the family dies (this is at the very beginning of the first chapter, so I'm not spoiling anything), and the series follows the life of the rest of the family: The 3 sons (2 male of 30ish and the girl who is in the last year of school), the widow wife, and some supporting characters
If you ask me, the acting and the writing are everything in this show. Characters are complex, they evolve they don't always move forward - sometimes lessons need to be learned multiple times, as real people do. And each actor does an amazing job in portraying their character.
Each one has 2/3 major arcs throughout the show, so it is very interesting to see them navigate them.
Different topics are touched across the episodes, many of them very controversial, but the show portrays them in a very serious way. There's some dark humour though; after all it's about a funeral home where death comes with customers in every episode.
Definitely a must watch. And even though it is more than 20 years old, it has aged very well.
Inside Out 2 (2024)
A good follow-up movie
I loved the Inside Out movie the first time I saw it. It managed to be a fun movie for kids, while also touching emotional themes relevant to us growing up. If you ask me, it is on the top 5 of best Pixar movies
Inside Out 2 follows this theme more or less with good results. Animation is still superb, the voices really transmit the emotions they represent, and all in all, it works well as a sequel. They are able to show new complex themes puberty-related in a fun way, as well as having jokes for all ages. I think the prior movie handled these themes a little better, or at least it was able to feel them more deeply than this movie
I do prefer Inside Out 1, but it does a good justice, and it is a good movie on its own.
