Kimetsu no Yaiba: Katanakaji no Sato-hen (2023)
People need to learn how to read
This 'film' is not a NEW movie. When you book it, it literally tells you that this is the two final episodes of season 2 and the brand new season 3 premiere.
I have no idea why so many people are moaning that they got scammed. Do they lack any patience and fail to read things before getting annoyed that their biases were wrong?
As for this showing- it's a lot of fun. Episode 10 looks amazing on the big screen, episode 11 is a gut-wrenching tale and the season 3 premiere looked amazing on the big screen.
One con is that they didn't remove the credits for episodes 10 and 11, leading to some awkward pauses in the flow.
Glass Onion (2022)
More 'paint by numbers' than a glass onion
The long-awaited sequel to Knives Out is here, and although it's still a good time, it feels like a let down overall.
The first film told such a unique and superb mystery that wrapped layers upon layers on top of each other. Meanwhile, Glass Onion tells a story that feels incredibly basic in comparison.
The main problem with this film is that although it's a mystery film, it doesn't give you the tools to solve the mystery. Instead the film walks through the plot and witholds infomation to have big reveals, rather than giving you the clues to work it out yourself.
Daniel Craig was fun the the cast was good overall, with Ed Norton being a big standout. Some characters felt wasted sadly.
Overall, a fun but underwhelming time.
Chainsaw Man: Dog & Chainsaw (2022)
The Chainsaw Man is finally here
This long-awaited anime begins with an incredible episode. We get so much fantastic character work, frantic action and emotional beats squeezed into this single episode. The pacing here is absolutley perfect; moving things along swiftly while giving us enough time to get to know Denji, Poochita and all the other important players.
While the writing is great, its the animation that stands out. Everything about this episode looks AMAZING. Seriously, the animation during the action scenes is on another level. Its clear how much time and passion has gone into this series and how they plan on it becoming a sensation.
After this episode, I'm excited to see what's next for our characters and who else we will meet.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: The Retreat (2022)
This episode shows how bad this entire series missed the mark
Its painfully clear now that She Hulk is a tremendous waste of the viewer's time.
Our first 3 episodes were decent, providing a look at the legal world within the MCU.
After then, the show has been on a rapid downward turn of some of the most bland and utterly terrible plots I have ever seen.
This episode continues this, with the entire plot for this episode feeling so valid and hollow we are left wondering exactly what is the point.
I can give a single positive- every actor is doing great. They are trying so hard despite how awful the writing is. Its impressive they can deliver these lines at all.
Also- the show really teased a certain iconic character returning, only to make us wait until the penulimate episode?
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Just Jen (2022)
This episode highlights everything wrong with the show
Another She-Hulk episode, another half an hour wasted.
Where to begin? Firstly, its now incredibly clear that this show does not care about getting anywhere anytime soon. Plot may as well not exist in the world of she hulk, since we waste 30 minutes on issues such as dating, weddings and copyright.
I can give this episode one positive factor; the acting is mainly good. Of course, the actors cannot save this terrible script, but they mostly try.
Another weakness in this episode is the awful CGI and editing. Scenes just clumsily collide with no thought about how they flow. Also, the music is just terrible.
Overall, this is the worst episode yet.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans (2022)
Just... why?
What is the point of this show anymore?
For a comedy, the jokes fall utterly flat everytime and the humour is painfully obvious.
For a legal drama, the courtroom scenes are utterly awful. Its clear they did not care about the lawyer scenes at all which is sad considering its half of She Hulk's character.
For a sitcom, its soulless and lazy. Where is the charm? Why does this show cost so much yet look so awful?
Why does every character just go through the same motions each week?
What has been the point of anything?
This episode was easily the weakest. The episode was so short yet the plot was still paper thin and stretched out.
See How They Run (2022)
A fun and witty mystery romp
Its a good year for ensemble films with large casts and wacky tones.
I really enjoyed this one. Although the first few scenes are a bit clunky with some exposition-heavy dialogue, the pieces soon fall into place and we are left with a brisk and exciting mystery.
The cast is great. We get a range of characters with differing personalities for lots of fun scenes. Shout out to the fantastic Sam Rockwell who steals every scene he is in, and Saoirse Ronan is also brilliant. Adrien Brody is also great and its always a treat seeing him in anything.
The visuals are solid but none of them really stand out. The score is fine as well- it does the job but you won't be remembering it.
Overall- I recommend.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Is This Not Real Magic? (2022)
Embarrassing and lazy
She-Hulk is a great character. In the comics that is.
I was excited to see this show and how it tied She Hulk's legal antics into the world of the MCU. Instead this show tries to be a comedy and fails miserabley with jokes you can see coming a mile away.
This episode was utterly dull. I give credit to everybody's acting and Wong had some fun lines, but it feels like this show is just spinning in circles. She Hulk tries to do something, has a problem, realises something about herself, end of episode.
The problem with this show is that it feels so lazy. Everything looks cheap but expensive at the same time, with She Hulk's CGI being especially bad.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Superhuman Law (2022)
There is potential but the execution is so flawed
She Hulk is a great character who has some amazing comic book runs. But these series wastes her potential but making this show a bland and lifeless show that feels like a sitcom. There's some decent themes and ideas here but the mark is drastically missed with every lazy scene and awful cinematography.
There are some good things- everyone's acting is solid, even if again they feel more like a sitcom than a superhero show.
The Sandman (2022)
A great first half, a terrible second
Honestly I don't know what happened to this show. The first half is great, with a thoughtful plot, slowburn pacing with great character beats, amazing visuals and ideas.
Then the second half is... awful. We meet some new characters with genuinely the worst acting I have ever seen, and none of them are interesting. The cinematography fades away and the plot is BAD.
Better Call Saul: Waterworks (2022)
The stakes have never been higher yet lower
Gene is in a pathetic spot and this episode does a brutal job highlighting that. When Jimmy turned his entire life into being Saul and lost that, he is now a hollow shell. The black and white visuals are more depressing than ever and this episode plays with beautiful nighttime jet black visuals to give it all a suffocating feeling.
Odenkirk was amazing as ever and plays an amazing amount of desperation. We almost feel sorry for him.
This wasn't the wow earner people would expect for a penultimate episode, but its something far sadder and more long lasting.
Bullet Train (2022)
A non stop thrillride
This movie grabs you from the start and doesn't let go. Its an entertaining whirlwind of goofy character after goofy character, and awesome fight after awesome fight. Brad Pitt nails his leading role and everyone else does great.
The visuals of the film are fantastic- soaked in a beautiful neon glow. While soundtrack is fine but not too memorable outside of the film.
Overall, this is a great summer watch.
Better Call Saul: Fun and Games (2022)
Another winner
What is there to say that cannot already be said? The pacing is like a roller coaster now, the acting is better than ever, and every piece of cinematography is beautiful.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Thor: Rush and Blunder
I'll keep this short. This film was clearly two and a half hours long, but half an hour was cut out so they could have more showings. As a result, we are left with a rushed film that was weak writing, bad CGI and some painfully unfunny scenes.
There are some good aspects; Thor is charming, Jane is great and Gor is a scene-stealer. But Korg is awful and Valkeryie is completely wasted.
Marvel needs to take a look at themselves and stop going for quantity over quality.
Ms. Marvel: Destined (2022)
So much potential but so boring...
Ms Marvel is a great character. But this show wastes her potential by changing her powers (which is centeral to her entire character and origin arc) while the whole show has a bland kids show vibe.
The Boys: The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies (2022)
A weird and wonderful ride
The boys season 3 continues with hit after hit. Every episode has gives us amazing character development powered by incredible acting. The classic wacky moments are here as always, but so are the tragic dark moments as well. A great episode.
Ms. Marvel: Crushed (2022)
Okay but could be better
Once again Ms Marvel herself is carrying this show with infectious charm and heart. But the writing feels so clunky with the drama being pretty lackluster. They are trying to go for a lowstakes fun time while having actual drama and it doesn't really work.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part V (2022)
I have seen him... in my minds eye
After a rough episode, Kenobi is back and the show hits the ground running. We get some great character development, cool emotional beats and some solid action. Everything gears up for a great finale.
The Boys: Glorious Five Year Plan (2022)
Now that was DIABOLICAL
I don't want to give anything away but this episode was outstanding. The tension was on point throughtout the entire episode, the acting was amazing as usual and we see some amazing character development continue. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
The best one yet.
I don't want to give away too much, but this is a fantastic episode. Ewan is brilliant once again and there are some major epic moments for Star Wars fans.
Ms. Marvel: Generation Why (2022)
Heartfelt but ultimately lacking
Ms Marvel is finally here. This episode is carried by plenty of heart and humour, but it has some weaknesses that hold it back from greatness.
Firstly, Ms Marvel herself is carrying this show. Iman Vellani is so confident and loveable in the role of Kamala and radiates joy whenever she's in a scene, she definetly is passionate about Kamala and it shows. I also liked the nice representstion in the show and how natural it was.
The weaknesses? The dialogue and script are mostly lacking. This is only the first episode, but right now its a clunky time. Also the school drama stuff is really uninteresting to me, it feels so dull and low stakes. The family drama is much more interesting in comparison, and that still isn't that good.
Ms Marvel has a lot of potential. Hopefully now that the first episode is done, the other episodes can tighten up the focus and give us more great Kamala scenes.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part II (2022)
A solid time.
This episode is not groundbreaking but it is not bad at all either. The series so far is certainly being carried by Ewan, who brings a great sense of gravitas to Kenobi.
The main flaw so far is the writing and one potential arc they are setting up. I hope the show named Kenobi actually stays about... Kenobi.
Better Call Saul: Plan and Execution (2022)
Jaw dropping and brutal.
After lots of build up, we finally see the pin drop. This episode was so incredibly tense, with every moment being one I couldn't look away from. The acting was also amazing as usual, with Bob, Rhea and Patrick being extra incredible.
This is an episode people will always remember when they think of this show.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
A complete waste of an amazing cast and director
I can't begin to describe how bad this film is. It ruins beloved characters. Its less than 2 hours yet drags on forever. The fights were cgi cluster messes and the usual MCU humour was absent, and the few jokes were really poor. Nothing interesting happens.
Also the plot... what plot? Its scene after scene of characters spouting exposition.
This film should have been a fun thrill ride through the multiverse. But instead its a mess.
Moon Knight: Gods and Monsters (2022)
Another rushed finale
An issue with these Disney+ Marvel shows is how underwhelming and rushed the finales can be. Sadly, Moon Knight is no exception. The last episode slowed the pacing down to bring us some fantastic character development, but it sadly means this finale has too much to do in a single moment. There are some solid beats and cool scenes, but the attempts at wrapping up the story and finishing arcs feels rushed and sloppy.
