The 6th WCRP International Conference on Reanalysis (ICR6)
The Sixth WCRP International Conference on Reanalysis (ICR6) was held in Tokyo from 28 October to 1 November 2024, under initiatives from the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), “Climate change actions with CO-creation powered by Regional weather information and E-technology” (ClimCORE), and the University of Tokyo. The aim of the Conference is to exchange the latest technical knowledge on the creation of reanalysis in Japan and around the world, as well as to discuss the application of reanalysis in rapidly developing fields, such as machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years. Approximately 200 experts from 27 countries and regions came together and had active discussions in aforementioned fields.
The conference reaffirmed that reanalysis is now the best tool for science to inform society in the era of climate crisis and expressed the need for expanding the scope of consistency across the entire Earth system, better quantifying and communicating uncertainties, and benefiting from ML while being ML-friendly at the same time. The discussions also emphasized that collaboration among reanalysis producers and with reanalysis users is key to future improvements.
