The far western end of the state is located in the Gulf Coastal Plain of the central United States and consists of alluvial deposits and loess. The Mississippi embayment physiographic region is bounded by the Mississippi River, Ohio River, and Tennessee River (now Kentucky Lake) and includes the lowest elevations in the state. The area was added to the state in 1818 when it was purchased from the Chickasaw by Isaac Shelby and Andrew Jackson and is known as the Jackson Purchase.
