  • "For all intents and purposes, I died in the pool," states 59-year-old Jay Greeson. When Jay, at the McGrath Family YMCA in Spring Valley, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, lifeguards James Getch and Michaela Higginson sprang into action. After four shocks and a hospital stay, Jay made a full recovery. James and Michaela's quick response and use of an AED saved Jay's life, and this incredible rescue highlights the importance of CPR and AED training. • A recent study which was co-authored by Scientific Advisory Council member Angela Beale-Tawfeeq,Ph.D., MPH, "Barriers to Swimming Lessons," highlights how racial and ethnic disparities create and complicate barriers for children becoming water competent. 🌟 Here's what you should take away: 1️⃣ Racial & Economic Disparities: Black and Hispanic/Latine families face greater challenges in accessing swimming lessons compared to white families. 2️⃣Unique Barriers: Barriers differed across race and ethnic groups. i.e. In the study, Black parents scored higher in the category of not feeling comfortable with swimming themselves. 3️⃣COVID-19 Impact: The pandemic worsened access issues with pool closures and lifeguard shortages. 4️⃣ Common Barriers: Cost was a barrier for all groups. It's clear that access to affordable, high quality lessons is more crucial than ever. Learn more how you can help us build confidence in water, for life by visiting redcross.org/centennial.

  • Meet Dr. Steve Langendorfer, a member of the Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council who sits on the Aquatics Sub-Council. Following his mom’s footsteps in volunteer service to the Red Cross, who was a First Aid Instructor and disaster relief volunteer for 75 years, Steve employs his background as a scientist to guide our programs. Steve is a developmental kinesiologist studying how persons change their movement across the lifespan. His particular specialization as an aquatic developmental kinesiologist is studying how persons learn to swim and, more contemporarily, how to prevent drowning. He also serves as the founding editor of the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education. On the Aquatics Sub-Council, Steve performs scientific reviews in aid of assuring Red Cross aquatic programs follow the most contemporary scientific evidence. Specifically, a concept, water competence, that he first published years ago is being integrated into Red Cross aquatic programs and provides an excellent theory-into-practice process to help address drowning prevention. When Steve looks back over his decades on the Scientific Advisory Council, he can see how much Red Cross programs have changed and improved including our use of online content to support instruction in face-to-face courses. Steve is just as passionate about the people on the Council as he is about the subject matter. He exclaims, “What’s not to like?!” when talking about his fellow Council members, calling them “highly motivated” and “very bright” aquatic professionals. He further lauds the Council members as well as “all the incredible other volunteers I have worked with ranging from my blood donations to creating the original Infant-Preschool Aquatic Program (IPAP) back in the late 1980s right up to our current revisions of Water Safety Instruction programs.” Steve encourages everyone to make a difference through the Red Cross – whether it be donating blood, learning CPR and First Aid, serving as a lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor, or being a member of the Scientific Advisory Council. Steve, volunteers like you are our lifeblood! We thank you for being so active with the Red Cross and for contributing to our mission in so many ways.

  • “Be prepared, don’t be scared.” This is American Red Cross Instructor Jim Campbell’s favorite phrase to start his classes. Fueled by the belief that everyone needs to know how to save a life, Jim has been teaching First Aid/CPR/AED with the Red Cross for over 20 years and is a retired paramedic with over 35 years of experience. The biggest lesson Jim has learned from teaching is that not everyone learns on the same level, and he’s had many students anxious that they will not pass. However, Jim goes above and beyond to ensure that all his students leave equipped with lifesaving skills. In the past, Jim has sat with students for hours, and they leave class prepared and grateful for his efforts. Additionally, in 2007, Jim was inspired to start a consulting agency, California Safety and Fire Specialists, to teach organizations workplace safety and disaster preparedness. His business allows him to make a greater impact in his community. His commitment to his craft as an Instructor shines through as even with his busy schedule, he always makes time to spread the knowledge of lifesaving skills to more students on his off days. When Jim isn’t teaching in the classroom, a fun fact about him is that he’s a professional race car driver in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing. Thank you for your dedication, Jim! We are proud to have you as a Red Cross Instructor. ❤️
