About us
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) is an economic development agency of the federal government and 13 state governments focusing on 420 counties across the Appalachian Region. ARC’s mission is to innovate, partner, and invest to build community capacity and strengthen economic growth in Appalachia to help the Region achieve socioeconomic parity with the nation. Established by an act of Congress in 1965, ARC has been working directly with federal, state and local partners to build a sustainable economic future for the Region. In fiscal year 2015, ARC approved more than $101 million in funding for 466 nonhighway projects in the Region. These investments will help create or retain more than 23,000 jobs, train more than 23,000 students and workers, attract an additional $204.9 million in other project funding, and leverage $765.8 million in private investments in Appalachia. NBC News recently highlighted Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, featuring our incredible partner Appalachia Service Project 🤩 They've already rebuilt 8 homes in time for the holidays, with plans to rebuild or repair 200 total homes in impacted communities. They're also using $10M in ARISE funding to establish new disaster response hubs, which will help improve future recovery efforts across three Appalachian states. We're beyond proud to support partners like Appalachia Service Project as they lead on-the-ground recovery efforts in the region. ❤️👇

Capacity is the ability to identify local challenges and implement effective solutions. We help build capacity through funding, no-cost training, technical assistance and other strategies - and we want to hear how we can be even more effective in our local investments! Take our 10-minute survey (and share with other organizations in the Appalachian Region!) to help inform our capacity-building strategy for the next five years: https://lnkd.in/d7mr7nrm We're excited to put your insights into action 🙌

At last week's Appalachian Leadership Institute session, fellows heard from experts and alumni on a difficult and important topic: recovery from Hurricane Helene. 💙 During the panel, North Carolina Department of Commerce's Olivia Collier shared how Central Appalachia will be shaped by the storm for many years to come; it will cost $1B to repair the Blue Ridge Parkway alone. This won't stop Appalachian resilience and innovation though. Among other firsts since the storm, David Crockett Birthplace State Park in Eastern Tennessee has packed up historical artifacts and brought them to other locations to continue visitor education (pictured). Greene County Partnership CEO Jeff Taylor said this may be one of the first "mobile" state parks! 🚐 As the long journey of rebuilding communities continues, the strength of the region's people will shine through. We're thankful for our panelists, and all of our partners, who are making recovery possible and sharing their wisdom with others.
