Sofía Torallas Tovar, a renowned papyrologist, has joined the Institute for Advanced Study as long-term Distinguished Visiting Professor in the School of Historical Studies. A prolific scholar of the ancient Mediterranean, Torallas Tovar's work encompasses Greek and Coptic magical texts, funerary practices and culture, patristic literature, the Coptic Bible, and Philo and Alexandrian Judaism. 🔗 Read more about Torallas Tovar and her research: https://lnkd.in/eNB9jkAz

The Institute for Advanced Study has made two new appointments to its Board of Trustees: Paul DiMaggio, a Professor of Sociology at New York University, and Anoop Prasad, Managing Director and member of the Executive Committee of D. Congratulations to John J. Hopfield, Visiting Professor (2010–13) in the School of Natural Sciences, currently based at Princeton University, who was named a recipient of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics along with Geoffrey E. Hinton of the University of Toronto. The pair was cited “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.” Combining tools from physics, molecular biology, and neuroscience, Hopfield has deepened fundamental understanding of neural networks. His work serves as a foundation for the fast-evolving field of machine learning, which draws its inspiration from the structure of the brain. Hopfield remains active within the Institute’s Simons Center for Systems Biology, which concentrates on research at the interface of molecular biology and the physical sciences. As our community gathers on the Institute for Advanced Study campus for the start of the 2024–25 academic year, we are introducing a new video series: Institute Instances. Institute Instances is a collection of 1–2 minute video snapshots of scholars, staff, and visitors to the Institute for Advanced Study answering a question (or two) about their work at IAS. Viewed individually, these clips allow audiences to get to know the people who are, in the words of founding IAS Director Abraham Flexner, "pushing beyond the present limits of human knowledge" through advancements in science and the humanities. The Institute for Advanced Study commenced its 2024–25 academic year on September 23, 2024, welcoming scholars from around the globe to its storied campus. The 267 visiting scholars, who began arriving earlier in the month, represent 35 nations and more than 130 institutions. Each is selected by the Institute’s permanent Faculty based on the promise of their research, spanning the sciences and humanities. All scholars belong to one of the Institute’s four Schools—Historical Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Science. In his remarks to the 2024–25 class, delivered in Wolfensohn Hall, IAS Director and Leon Levy Professor David Nirenberg welcomed the scholars to “a very peculiar space and temporality, a space of thought and a time of mind.” The scholars were then invited to a lively reception in Simons Hall, which provided an opportunity to meet new colleagues from various disciplines and begin to foster the exchange of ideas.
