Fridays are special at MaineHealth Neurology in Scarborough, because that’s the day that Stevie comes to visit. Stevie is a gentle and affectionate Golden Retriever, who is part of a broader program run by MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Volunteer Services, which pairs therapy dogs and their handlers with healthcare teams in the Portland, Falmouth, and Scarborough campuses. When Stevie, makes her rounds, she brings calm and joy to care team members and patients alike. “Stevie’s visits are the highlight of my week,” says Lil D., Scheduling Specialist. “No matter how stressful the day gets, seeing her wagging tail and sweet face reminds me to take a breath and smile.” “It’s amazing how much she lifts morale,” says Giselle L., BSN, RN. “You’ll see people who’ve been running around all day stop, kneel down, and just spend a moment with Stevie. That connection resets something in you.” As for Stevie, her job seems to bring her as much joy as it does the care team. “She loves coming here,” says her handler, Nancy Wyman. “The moment we pull into the parking lot, her tail starts wagging. She knows she’s about to see her friends.”
