💫 As this year draws to a close, read our CEO's thoughts on how #TheTechWeWant will be at the centre of everything we do in 2025.
For our year ahead at Open Knowledge Foundation, we will continue to fight for a knowledge society rather than a surveillance society, one that benefits the many rather than the few and is built on the principles of collaboration rather than control, empowerment rather than exploitation, and sharing rather than monopoly. https://lnkd.in/dftwKu_q

With a webinar where we explained the results, yesterday we ended at Storydata the pilot of the Open Data Editor software, from the Open Knowledge Foundation, a #OpenData organization with which we feel completely aligned. During two months the Storydata team, Cristina Claverol López, Carlos Albaladejo and Eli Vivas and ACIJ - Asociación Civil por la Igualdad y la Justicia organization, have tested the functionalities of this tool, which will help people without coding knowledge to detect errors in their data. We have made recommendations for improvements, and have detected potential users. In our experience, there are more and more technicians from public administrations or companies, researchers, journalists or designers who are becoming data viewers, without a technical background, but who are going to incorporate data in their daily work. Open Data Editor will help them to see why the calculations are not working well or why they cannot visualize them. We explain here the result of our test. https://lnkd.in/dAaFitj4 Thanks Romina Colman Sara Petti and Open Knowledge Foundation for trusting us.

------ 🌎🇧🇷🪅 It took us a few days to digest an event as huge as #OpenAmerica in Brazil. In the following post by our Tech Lead Patricio Del Boca, we've organised some of our learnings after engaging in discussions mainly about the climate crisis: ◉ There is a huge lack of tools and capacity. ◉ It is essential to start generating data for disaster response. ◉ An important role for civil society is to provide capacity and perspective to governments in times of crisis. ◉ There is a huge gap (in terms of communication) between activists and citizens. ◉ The same is true between government and citizens; government communication needs to be transformed. ◉ Moments of crisis generate voluntary initiatives that inform the state, the challenge now is how to institutionalise such efforts. ◉ The need to include the vision and voices of young people in the movement. 👉🏾 Read the full post: https://lnkd.in/duBEArKC 🌱 We were also able to launch #OpenDataEditor first-hand to the Latin American community. We were very happy with the reception of the tool in the community, with very interesting feedback and contacts from small organisations interested in the pilot programmes. In the coming year, we hope to expand our contributions with the Latam organisations part of the open movement! (And congrats Open Knowledge Brasil for such a powerful event!)

AI is a powerful tool - but the real power lies in choosing to use it for humanity. At The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, we’re investing $73.5 million this year to ensure AI becomes a force for good - strengthening human dignity, protecting the vulnerable, and enabling sustainable progress. This funding sustains our partnerships with 144 impactful organizations working across fields like health, climate, education, and human rights. Together, we’re advancing: 🌐 Inclusive governance - making sure AI reflects diverse voices and shared values. 💡 Real-world solutions - using AI to tackle today’s most urgent challenges. 🏛️ Strong institutions - building systems that make AI accountable and equitable. We believe AI’s potential isn’t just about smarter systems, but about creating a more just, resilient, and dignified world. And shaping that future is up to all of us. Besides being very successful projects, Prototype Fund & Prototype Fund CH are great examples of project replication within the #OpenKnowledgeNetwork. On 26th November, during our Network monthly call, Marie Kreil, co-director of the Prototype Fund at Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland e. V., and Verena Kontschieder, Project Lead for Prototype Fund at Opendata.ch (our Swiss chapter), presented the Prototype Fund in their respective countries. 💡 Did you know the story behind this initiative? 👉🏾 Learn more in this blog by Sara Petti: https://lnkd.in/dtngdcnA

The Open Knowledge Foundation Network connects activists and change-makers of the #OpenKnowledge movement from more than 40 countries around the world, who are advancing open and equitable access to knowledge for all everyday through their work. We believe knowledge is power, and that with key information accessible and openly available, power can be held to account, inequality challenged, and inefficiencies exposed. With the Network we meet virtually once a month. During our monthly call two weeks ago we had the chance to hear about Prototype Fund in Germany and Switzerland from Marie Kreil (Open Knowledge Foundation Deutschland e. V.) and Verena Kontschieder (Opendata.ch) [Thank you both SO much!]. Prototype Fund offers funding with a lightweight structure for public interest tech, allowing individuals and small teams who do not have professional grant-writing skills to easily access funding. It is a space for experiment. Besides being a very successful project, Prototype Fund is also a great example of project replication within the Network, something we would love to see happening more! Are you curious to know more? I wrote a short blog to recap the call. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/d9BiRpw4
