About us
Oxford Cryosystems is a market-leading manufacturer of specialist cryogenic instrumentation and software in the area of X-ray Crystallography. It also manufactures a range of Gifford McMahon Cryocoolers, The roots of the company lie in the design and manufacture of the original Cryostream Cooler in 1985, which immediately became the system of choice for cooling samples in X-ray diffraction experiments. The range of products for use in sample cooling has expanded over the last twenty-five years to include liquid-free systems, helium coolers and specially adapted systems for use with powder samples, and today the company is considered to be the global market leader in X-ray diffraction sample cooling. A complementary range of products is our “Coolstar” range of Gifford McMahon Cryocoolers, used in applications as diverse as vacuum pumps and astrophysics. These single and two-stage coolers are well-known for their compact size and ease of use, allowing them to be easily incorporated into OEM applications. The final group of products is produced by our in-house software team. Our software brand, Crystallographica, offers both free software for crystallography teaching as well as one of the best-known search-match programs.

The first ever Wide Nozzle Cryostream for #microCT has been installed at the University of Portsmouth! Charlie Wood will be utilizing this cutting-edge device for X-ray microscopy with sub-micron resolution. It provides a significant enhancement to cryogenic sample cooling for a variety of biological samples, including plant and animal tissues. The Wide Nozzle provides a large area of cryogenic gas, beneficial for cooling the big samples that get used in X-ray microscopy, and allows for the examination of larger sample regions compared to other techniques such as cryo-Electron Microscopy. This installation at the University of Portsmouth marks the commercialisation of this technology and represents a significant advancement in research capabilities across the board. 📹 Watch the assembly of the first SKA-Mid dish on site in South Africa! Last week's "big lift" of the 24-tonne main reflector marked another milestone on our construction journey. What happens next? SKA-Mid Site Construction Director Tracy Cheetham tells us that more components will be installed on the dish in the coming weeks, starting with the feed indexer. “As a team we are now totally focused on the next stage of activities because we have already got two more dish structures on site, ready for assembly," she says.
