#TechTuesday TSN using the TSRV The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has successfully installed an advanced Thermal Spray Nonskid (TSN) coating system on the USS Kearsarge using the innovative Thermal Spray Robotic Vehicle (TSRV). The TSRV, a state-of-the-art robotic vehicle, automates the process of applying TSN, further improving efficiency and reducing costs. The TSRV combines multiple steps of the TSN application process, from deck preparation to spraying the non-skid solution. TSN, developed by NRL, offers substantial advantages over traditional nonskid coatings by lasting significantly longer and improving corrosion resistance. This project demonstrates the power of robotics and automation in ship repair, ensuring our Navy remains prepared for any mission. #NRL #USNavy #Innovation #Technology #ShipMaintenance #TSN #TSRV #FleetModernization #NavalResearch #ShipRepair #Robotics #NRLresearch #navalmissions https://lnkd.in/eEmCuunE US Navy United States Department of Defense

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Leading the Advances in the Ocean Surface Wave Slope Retrievals using Polarimetric Remote Sensing NRL's Dr. Ahmed El-Habashi recently presented at the APOLO 2024 conference in Kyoto, Japan, showcasing NRL's groundbreaking work on retrieving ocean wave slopes using polarimetric remote sensing. This innovative approach helps us better understand the interaction between the ocean and atmosphere, impacting weather patterns, climate dynamics, and marine navigation. NRL is also excited to be collaborating with NASA to leverage the power of hyperspectral polarization from the PACE satellite. By analyzing sunlight reflected from Earth's atmosphere and ocean, we can gain valuable insights into ocean health, including the distribution of phytoplankton, which is essential for the marine ecosystem. #NRL #OceanResearch #Science #Technology #Innovation #Climate #RemoteSensing #NASA US Navy United States Department of Defense

NRL Research Sheds Light on Ocean Dynamics Dr. Jackie May, a an oceanographer at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), has made significant strides in understanding the complex interactions between the ocean and atmosphere. Her groundbreaking research, featured on the cover of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (JMSE), explores how ocean currents influence atmospheric wind stress and, in turn, affect the upper ocean's thermodynamic structure. By using high-resolution coupled atmosphere-ocean models, Dr. May's team has demonstrated that incorporating current feedback into these models leads to substantial changes in the distribution of heat throughout the upper ocean. These changes are closely linked to the ocean's vorticity patterns, with warmer temperatures observed in areas of cyclonic vorticity and cooler temperatures in areas of anticyclonic vorticity. Furthermore, the study reveals that current feedback reduces the vertical heat flux across various spatial scales, particularly in regions with significant temperature differences between the sea surface and the mixed layer. These findings have far-reaching implications for understanding ocean heat transport, climate variability, and the overall energy balance of the Earth system. Dr. May's research not only advances our scientific understanding of ocean dynamics but also has practical applications for naval operations, marine forecasting, and climate modeling. By unraveling the intricate interplay between ocean currents and atmospheric winds, scientists can improve their ability to predict ocean conditions and mitigate risks associated with extreme weather events.
