Broadband QoE: 3 New Reports from TIP Back in 2006 I had the honour of being the Technical Chairman of the Broadband Forum (it was called the DSL Forum in those days). One of the key Technical Recommendations we published that year was TR-126 "Triple-play Services Quality of Experience (QoE) Requirements" (https://lnkd.in/eTFUUwVK). This was one of the first standards/fora documents to link service requirements to network performance metrics. This was the "triple-play" era of video + voice + data (Internet access) bundles. Video resolution was either SD or HD. TR-126 was a landmark document that covered factors such as the human perception of video quality as well as the QoE dimensions for online games and web-browsing. It sought to link the different service requirements to network parameters in terms of throughput, latency, jitter and packet loss.   In the ~20 years since TR-126 was published the broadband world has changed dramatically. DSL is being replaced by FTTH, Cable has moved to DOCSIS 3.1/DOCSIS 4.0 and so Gigabit broadband is relatively common in mature markets. Video streaming at 4k Ultra-HD, cloud gaming and interactive immersive experiences are all readily available. This places new demands on networks. We also have a richer toolkit to improve network performance measurement (such as Quality Attenuation - see BBF TR-452.1), improved scheduling (e.g. IETF's L4S) and linking network performance to application outcomes (e.g. IETF's Quality of Outcome metric - QoO). The work by CableLabs and CAMARA on Network as a Service KPI's (such as Quality on Demand - QoD) can also play a role in this space. Finally, there is huge potential for ML to add value here, by identifying the key network performance metrics and values that correlate with application KPIs.   The work published by TIP below looks at the link between application outcomes and network performance metrics in the modern era. This has never been more important, since simply marketing broadband at ever increasing speeds is producing diminishing returns in terms of customer perceived benefits. It is primarily the application outcome that determines the customer's QoE, not just the speed test result. I would like to thank my colleagues Mayur Channegowda and Kevin Smith for their contributions to this TIP work as well as the other contributors and Francois Blouin from Meta (who also worked on BBF TR-126 back in 2006).  This is a fantastic time to be working in Broadband. HTZ Communications manages Critical communications EU FEDER funding for the southern Spanish region of Andalusia enabled SANDETEL to purchase HTZ Communications to update their public safety networks. In a drive to improve critical communications, local agent SANDETEL, who manages public networks across the region, will use HTZ Communications to support Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) network planning and optimisation. Initially, they will assess network coverage across the region by importing the existing network and drive test measures, identifying not-spots and analysing DMR coverage on a surface area and point-to-point basis. Later, HTZ will be used to expand and optimise these networks by leveraging the automated frequency assignment function. The team will analyse and mitigate the impact of network interference. The challenge has been and continues to be, DAS has been overused and acts as a HAMMER to solve for use cases it is not a good fit for. Innovation continues to be somewhere between slow and non-existent, embracing value creating solutions is marginalized, and we continue to look to the next technology evolution (5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, #6Greset) to solve the problem that has been facing the Enterprise for the last 10 years. Protecting revenue, margins, growth, network differentiation, etc., etc., etc. are the justifications for continuing the failed model, all while continuing to perpetuate the issues that work against everyone’s best interest. Thanks to Nokia Drone Networks, drones equipped with high-definition and AI-enhanced thermal imaging capabilities can now provide real-time aerial footage, including vital details like fire parameters, smoke plumes, and the number and location of individuals in distress. This invaluable data is transmitted to control centers promptly, aiding in the formulation of precise action plans to save lives and protect assets and natural resources. Operating round-the-clock, these drones are dispatched from strategically positioned docking stations, ensuring continuous coverage and support to emergency teams on the ground.

5G Physical Layer (5G Series - Part 17) In 5G, radio resources are flexibly assigned in both time and frequency, allowing for optimized connectivity. For instance, with subcarrier spacing (like 15kHz in a numerology of 0), we see how downlink resources are allocated, beginning with essential signals: Synchronization Signals: Help users initially access the network. SSB (Synchronization signal block) consists of PSS, SSS, PBCH & PBCH-DMRS. Multiple SSB used in NR for different beams with distinguished pattern. It can also be used by the UE for RSRP and RSRQ measurements. Broadcast Channels: Provide vital network information. Control Channels: Manage scheduling and coordination. Shared Channels: Deliver user data, aided by reference signals that assess channel quality. To illustrate, let’s look at a high-frequency band (50MHz channel bandwidth) with a 10ms frame. Visualizing it on a grid: X-axis (time) shows OFDM symbols (slots). Y-axis (frequency) represents resource blocks (RBs), which vary with subcarrier spacing (e.g., 66 RBs at 60kHz spacing). 5G's flexible resource allocation, tailored by channel needs and spacing, is pivotal for enhanced connectivity and performance.
