Projects

  • Velodroom

    -

The Velodroom bicycle lighting system is designed to address the issues of nighttime and daytime urban bike commuting. It is a one of a kind bicycle light set, with embedded sensors, powered by USB-rechargeable battery. The lights turn on with bike movement and switch off 60 seconds after the bike has stopped. Built in accelerometer analyses the motion of the bicycle and turns on the rear stop light while braking. This possibly saves your life and certainly looks stunning.

The aim of SAMURAI is to develop and integrate an innovative intelligent surveillance system for robust monitoring of both inside and surrounding areas of a critical public infrastructure site. SAMURAI has three significant novelties that make it distinctive from other recent and ongoing relevant activities both in the EU and elsewhere:

    - SAMURAI is to employ networked heterogeneous sensors rather than CCTV cameras alone so that multiple complementary sources of information can be fused to create a visualization of a more complete 'big picture' of a crowded public space.
    - Existing systems focus on analyzing recorded video using predefined hard rules, suffering from unacceptable false alarms. SAMURAI is to develop a real-time adaptive behavior profiling and abnormality detection system for alarm event alert and prediction with much reduced false alarm.
    - In addition to fix-positioned CCTV cameras, the SAMURAI system will also take command input from control room operators and mobile sensory input for patrolling security staff for a hybrid context-aware based abnormal behavior recognition. This is in contrary to current video behavior recognition system that relies purely on information extracted from the video data, often too ambiguous to be effective.

SAMURAI has the following scientific objectives:
    1. Develop innovative tools and systems for people, vehicle and luggage detection, tracking, type categorization across a network of cameras under real world conditions.

    2. Develop an abnormal behavior detection system based on a heterogeneous sensor network consisting of both fix-positioned CCTV cameras and mobile wearable cameras with audio and positioning sensors. These networked heterogeneous sensors will function cooperatively to provide enhanced situation awareness.

    3. Develop innovative tools using multi-modal data fusion and visualization of heterogeneous sensor input to enable more effective control room operator queries.

    -

ConcAV project developed a battery powered concealed surveillance camera system for logistics monitoring. The device family managed to provide 6 months of stand-alone recording capability. Within the project, also wireless telematics modules were implemented to provide prompt alarm response capability.

The Young Entrepreneur of the Year is Indrek Rebane, the executive and founder of Hedgehog OÜ, whose electronic design enterprise’s innovative solutions, passion and ambitious plans serve as an example for young entrepreneurs and students in making their dreams come true.

Robert Kitt, the Executive Manager of Corporate Banking of Swedbank, said that an innovative idea in the making needs to be recognised first and supported and nourished thereafter. “I advise entrepreneurs to keep an eye on the activities of the researchers and inventors operating in their sector – perhaps the latter are about to find a solution to a problem that has impeded the development of your company for years. Let us return a portion of our success to Estonian society by helping world-changing future technologies and products be born and by supporting them."
