🌉 Today, NOAA Coast Survey updated the bridge clearances for eight bridges crossing the Lower Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime navigation. 🛳️ Modern ships navigate U.S. ports with increasingly tight margins—under their keels, beneath bridges, and within narrow channels. As vessels grow in size and port infrastructure remains the same or experiences limited expansion, the margin for error becomes smaller. 🗺️ By leveraging advanced lidar technology and aligning clearance data with modern surveying standards, NOAA is equipping mariners with precise, real-time information to navigate one of the nation’s busiest waterways. ICYMI - an incredible bathymetry blanked from our colleague at NOAA Ocean Exploration! Internship Coordinator Jesse Gwinn used deep ocean bathymetry data for this project. Want to create something similar for your travels closer to the coast? Check out our bathymetry dataset at https://lnkd.in/eHnxGPAB, and follow Jesse's instructions linked below.
During a recent mapping expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, NOAA Ocean Exploration Internship Coordinator Jesse Gwinn combined her love of crochet with seafloor mapping data they were collecting on board to create a lasting reminder of her time at sea. The resulting bathymetry blanket gives a sense of the types of seafloor features "seen" over time throughout the expedition. Learn about Jesse's project: https://lnkd.in/exFry6_U [Images: NOAA Ocean Exploration Internship Program Coordinator Jesse Gwinn on the fantail of NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer with her in-progress bathymetry blanket, which illustrates ocean depth data collected during the Beyond the Blue: Johnston Atoll Mapping 2 expedition. The bathymetry blanket helps us communicate the importance of NOAA Ocean Exploration’s work in ocean mapping with new audiences, both human and pet.
