Nymphaeum

Nymphaeum: sanctuary dedicated to the nymphs, or a fountain in the city.

A nymphaeum was originally a sanctuary dedicated to the water nymphs, often in or near a cave. For example, Aristotle's school in Mieza was founded in a nymphaeum. In the Hellenistic and Roman world, nymphaea would be monumental fountains in a city, usually at the end of an aqueduct and decorated with all kinds of statues.
