Climbing Wall Info

The climbing wall is 33 ft. tall to the pinnacle and has a natural appearance, resembling the geology of North Dakota. The walls are Nicros Artificial Rock Technology walls, which incorporate both natural features and traditional rock climbing holds. The wall offers a variety of terrain from beginner to expert routes for bouldering and top rope climbing.

How do I get started?
Complete a 15-minute orientation with Climbing Wall and Outdoor Adventures staff during Climbing Wall hours. Orientation includes an overview of climbing basics, techniques, and safety. No registration is required.

What is bouldering?
Bouldering is rock climbing close enough to the ground that ropes are not needed. To help make landings safer, boulderers are encouraged to use spotters.

What is top rope climbing?
Top rope climbing is a form of rock climbing where an individual is securely attached to a climbing rope and supported by a partner. A technique called belaying protects the climber in case of a fall. The belay partner must complete our certification class.

How can I get belay certified?
The Wellness Center offers belay certification classes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Climbers will learn proper knot tying, equipment use and belay techniques. This class is for individuals who have completed orientation but want to take the next step in learning. No registration is required for this class.

Do I need a partner?
No, anyone can boulder without a partner. Our staff will help you pair up with other climbers who are looking to top rope climb.

What should I wear?
Wear clothing that allows freedom of movement.  For example, what you’re wearing should allow you to step up to the second rung of a ladder and/or do jumping jacks. Shoes are required and should fit snuggly. Socks are mandatory for rental shoes, which are provided free of charge.

How can I become a climbing instructor?
The Wellness Center is offering a three-day course Feb.14-16 for students and community members interested in earning the Professional Climbing Instructor Association's Climbing Wall Instructor Certification. See course and registration information here
