Register your vehicle

Most trucks, buses and tow trucks require a Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR) certificate before you register them.

Register your vehicle with:

• the International Registration Plan if you regularly travel throughout Canada and the United States

Get a truck or bus driver’s licence

Prepare for your test and application. Review the:

• truck handbook and air brake handbook
• read the bus handbook
• medical, vision and hearing standards for commercial drivers

Get a:

• truck driver’s licence (full Class A, restricted Class A and Class D)
• bus driver’s licence (school bus, transit, and ambulance)

As of November 1, 2024, online CVOR learning and assessment have replaced the old knowledge test that was done at DriveTest centres. New CVOR applicants will be required to complete courses online within six months of applying before they receive a certificate. You will no longer need to visit a DriveTest Centre to complete this requirement.

If you operate a tow truck or vehicle storage company, you must submit your rates to the Ministry of Transportation.

Tow operators, tow truck drivers, and vehicle storage operators require a certificate to provide towing or vehicle storage services in Ontario. You can apply for the certificates online for free starting July 4, 2023.
