Experiential Learning in College

Students outside

As a first-year student, you'll take a required first-year seminar about experiential learning. Learning by doing is a SUNY Oswego tradition that began with the college's founder, Edward Austin Sheldon

Experiential Learning in College (GST 104) is an 8-week course that will give you space to explore our campus, make connections, gain academic skills, and plan for your future. Students who have completed the course say that it helped them to transition from high school to college, and that it helped them to make Oswego feel like "home."

First-Year Experience Across Campus

Orientation + Advisement

New students connect with our Orientation staff and academic advisors right away. Over the summer, you'll meet your advisor, make your schedule, and get prepared for the Fall.

Advisors assist students with course registration, major exploration, academic success, and navigating college life.

Laker Launch

You'll get to move in early and participate in planned activities that will help you to get settled before classes begin.

First-Year Courses

During the first semester, all first-year students are enrolled in a course that focuses on transitioning to college life and learning about our campus. These are small courses that span multiple academic disciplines and interest areas including: signature courses, leadership and service, personal and career development.
