Avery’s creative practice spans jazz, electronic, and improvised music, as well as instrument building, film, photography, painting, and other disciplines. His interest in cultivating a “more level field for people of different trainings and backgrounds to create together” has led him to collaborate with both novice and professional artists, making participation accessible for a diverse group of practitioners.  As a bandleader and solo artist, his albums include Sore Thumb (inspired by the movements of sculptural mobiles, with no beginning, middle, or end) and Play (an ongoing, iterative project exploring the boundary between composition and improvisation). He has performed and recorded with artists including Theaster Gates, Tomeka Reid, Kurt Vile, Lonnie Holley, and Marshall Allen’s Ghost Horizons.
