    Similar Solids Worksheet

    For exercises 1­3, decide if each pair of cylinders are similar.  For each pair of similar 
    cylinders, tell how many times larger one is than the other (the scale factor).

     1) Cylinder 1:  height = 10 cm,   radius = 5 cm
    Cylinder 2:  height = 5 cm,     radius = 2.5 cm

    2) Cylinder 1:  height = 10 cm,   radius = 5 cm
    Cylinder 2:  height = 30 cm,   radius = 15 cm

    3) Cylinder 1:  height = 10 cm,   radius = 5 cm
    Cylinder 2:  height = 15 cm,   radius = 10 cm

    4) One cube has edges measuring 1 foot.  A second cube has edges measuring 2 feet. 

      A third cube has edges measuring 3 feet.

      a) Make scale drawings of the three cubes.  For each cube, tell what length in the
      drawing represents 1 foot.

      b) Find the surface area of each cube.

      c) Find the volume of each cube.

      d) Describe what happens to the surface area and volume of a cube when the edge
      lengths are doubled, tripled, etc.

    5) Express each measurement in the new units.  Draw diagrams to justify your 
                            answer.

    a) 1 square foot in square inches

    b) 1 square yard in square inches

    c) 1 cubic yard in cubic feet

    d) 2 square yards in square inches
    e) 3 square yards in square inches

    f) 4 square meters in square centimeters

    g) 1 cubic meter in cubic centimeters

    h) 6 cubic centimeters in cubic millimeters

    For problems 6 and 7, a company that specializes in creating models of buildings is hired 
    to develop models of pools for the planned improvements to the aquatics facilities at 
    Gunn.  The pools are rectangular prisms, and the scale factor from the model to the actual 
    pool is 120.

    6)   a) The dimensions of the actual diving pool are 20 meters by 20 meters by 4.9
      meters.  What are the dimensions of the model diving pool?

         b) What is the capacity (volume) of the actual diving pool?  What is the capacity of
      the model pool?

         c) What is the surface area of the actual diving pool?  What is the surface area of the
      model diving pool?  (Do not include the surface of the water.)

    7)   a) The planned water capacity of the pool used for water polo and swimming is
      1,650 cubic meters.  What is the capacity of the model pool?

          b) A sunken corridor with viewing windows is planned for the diving pool.  The area
      of a window in the actual setting is 160 square feet.  What is the area of the
      window on the model?
