2013 CITY COUNCIL HUMAN RIGHTS QUESTIONNAIRE

1. Many in the United States think of international affairs when they think of human rights. Our work emphasizes the applicability of the human rights framework here in the United States. Please share your thoughts on the domestic applicability of human rights, and discuss why human rights are important to you in the context of New York City and the City Council. We as humans living on planet earth have basic rights; they are human rights. Right to affordable and stable housing, Right to non-GMO affordable basic food grown based on need and not greed/profit, Right to living wage job, Right to universal single payer health care yet we here in New York City are struggling to survive and living from pay check to pay check. The City Council as the legislative body of the government of New York City is the vehicle thru which these basic human right must be administered, legislated and maintained. 2. How have you used current or previous professional positions to advance human rights? I am anti-war activist. I have demonstrated in front of my local library here in Flushing, NY to support our Troops by bringing them home. No more Blood for Oil! I have joined and participated in rallies to free political prisoners: Mumia Abu Jamal, Leonard Peltier and Maroon Schultz. I have marched again police brutality and racial profiling. I am in full support of the Lynne Stewart Defense Committee. I served on the Free David Wong Support Committee and now David Wong is a free man. 3. What will your top 3 legislative priorities be in your first term as Council Member? 1. Affordable Housing 2. Fair and Equitable taxation. Those that make more have a responsibility to give back to the society more. Progressive Taxation! Millionaires Tax! Billionaires Give Back Tax! 3. Affordable Transportation 4. What will your top 3 budget priorities be in your first term as Council Member? 1. Funding to build Affordable Housing 2. Funding to keep our teachers paid and our schools open. Funding to re-open public schools closed under the current administration. 3. Funding to built Community Centers in Flushing for inter generational support: seniors, youth, adults.

5. Do you plan to use participatory budgeting to allocate your discretionary funds? Why or why not? Yes I will use participatory budgeting to allocate discretionary funds. It is the fair, open and democratic way to run a local government. I shall be a people representative. 6. Please provide examples of recent legislation in Council that you believe promotes human rights. Community Safety Act: Racial Profiling targets a specific ethnic group. It creates fear and distrust in a community between its residents and the police. It does not deter crime. Police officers getting to know the neighborhood that they serve will deter crime. 7. Legislation is only one of many ways in which Council Members can work to advance human rights. What ways other than through legislation will you advance the human rights of New Yorkers as a City Council Member? I want to pass legislation for a living wage. I want to pass legislation for single payer universal health care. I want to pass New York City resident ID law for all residents of NYC. 8. Some advocates contend that the position of the Council Speaker has too much power over the progression of legislation. Please use this space to respond to that critique. It is true. The Council Speaker can decided what does and does not come to the floor for a vote. The Council Speaker is just one person out of 51 council members. He or she should not have that much power.
