    The Post-it note was invented by 3M's Arthur Fry using an adhesive

    developed by a colleague, Spencer Silver, is a piece of stationery with a re-


    adhere able strip of adhesive on the back, and it is designed to temporarily
    attaching notes to documents and to other surfaces. Post It Notes come in a
    variation of shapes and colors. It was very successful because it left behind
    no marks or residue. The post it note was created by Dr. Spencer Silver, a
    scientist at 3M in the United States. He developed a "low-tack", reusable
    pressure sensitive adhesive. However, Dr. Silver only tried to promote his
    post it note through seminars and local gatherings. The post it note touched
    no success until his colleague, Arthur Fry, came up with the idea to put
    adhesives on bookmarks. Fry was frustrated when his bookmarks kept on
    falling out of his pages. Fry then developed the idea by taking advantage of
    3M's officially sanctioned "permitted bootlegging" policy. The product was
    launched to customers but failed since they had never tried the product. A
    year later 3M issued free samples to residents of Boise, Idaho, United States.
    By 1980 the product was being sold nationwide in the US; a year later Post-
    its were launched in Canada and Europe.

    Timeline
    1968: Dr. Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3M in the United States, developed a
    "low-tack", reusable pressure sensitive adhesive.

    1968 – 1973: Silver promoted his invention within 3M, both informally and
    through seminars, but without much success.

    1974: Arthur Fry was frustrated that his bookmarks kept falling out of his
    hymnal. He had attended one of Silver's seminars and he came up with the
    idea of using the adhesive to anchor his bookmarks.
    1977: The post it notes were first launched to consumers but failed due to
    the fact that consumers had not tried the bookmark.

    1978: The post it note was reissued and was successful because samples
    were given to consumers.

    1980: The product was being sold nationwide in the US.

    1981: Post-its were launched in Canada and Europe.

    2003: Post-it Super Sticky notes were created with a stronger glue that
    adheres better to vertical and non-smooth surfaces.
