Problem Set 4 Due October 24rd, Before Class

This document contains a problem set on quantum physics. It includes three problems: 1. Analyzing the wave function and probability distributions for a static and moving wave packet. 2. Deriving the Schrodinger equation in momentum space by taking the Fourier transform of the position space Schrodinger equation for a free particle. 3. Generalizing the momentum space Schrodinger equation to include the effect of a potential V(x) by using the Fourier transform of the potential.

QUANTUM PHYSICS I

PROBLEM SET 4 due October 24rd, before class

Static wave-packet

At some instant a particle has the wave function (x) = Aex . 1. Normalize (x) and nd x and p (youve already done it last week). 2. Plot the probability density for the particle to be at x as a function of x. 3. Calculate and plot the probability density for the particle to have momentum p as a function of p.

The Schr odinger equation for a free particle is i

2 2 (x, t) = (x, t). t 2M x2

(3)

1. Find the equation that the Fourier transform c(p, t) of (x, t) dened by c(p, t) = satises. (Hint: apply

to both sides of the Schr odinger equation).

2. Solve this equation (assume that the intial condition c(p, 0) is given). Does the momentum distribution change with time ? 3. Generalize the result above for a particle under the inuence of a potential V (x) (you should write your answer (p) = dxeikx V (x) of the potential). You will nd a complicated integral in terms of the Fourier transform V equation instead of the algebraic equation found in the free case.
