Characterization - Berry

Berry, a black man, is hired to work as a dishwasher but is then overworked and given additional jobs. When an incident occurs involving a child, blame is placed solely on Berry and he is fired amid racist slurs. When Berry arrives by train for the job, Mrs. Osborn is dissatisfied to learn he is black and concerned about where he will sleep due to potential issues with other workers regarding a Negro working with them, as segregation and racism were common at the time.

BERRY IS THEN OVERWORKED AS HE IS GIVEN JOBS OUTSIDE OF DISHWASHING.

WHEN THE UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT OCCURRED WITH THE CHILD. INSTEAD OF TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED ,
BLAME WAS SOLELY PLACED ON BERRY AND HE WAS RELIEVED OF HIS JOB IN A HAIL OF RACIST SLURS.

WHEN MILBERRY DISEMBARKED THE TRAIN. MRS OSBORN WAS DISSATISFIED THAT THE
EMPLOYMENT AGENCY HAD SENT A BLACK

PERSON TO WORK FOR THEM.

WHEN THE BOY ARRIVED ON THE FOUR OCLOCK TRAIN, LO AND BEHOLD, HE TURNED OUT TO BE COLOURED!

MRS OSBORN WAS VERY CONCERNED AS


TO WHERE BERRY WOULD REST BECAUSE SHE
WAS NOT SURE HOW THE OTHER WORKERS WOULD REACT TO A NEGRO. SEGREGATION AND RACISM WAS THE ORDER OF THEM DAY.

The initial response is to pay Berry $2 less than the previous WHITE dishwasher..
