This 20 minute presentation discusses quantum theory and experiments that highlight its strange properties. It begins with the EPR paradox to introduce how quantum theory seems to allow faster-than-light communication. It then covers Bell's inequality and the GHZ experiment, which show that quantum systems violate local realism and support the theory's prediction of entanglement. The presentation aims to rekindle unease with quantum mechanics by discussing these experiments in an intuitive yet mathematically rigorous way within the time allotted.

Measuring the Metaphysical

Author: Gaurav Gautam Duration: 20 min Date: 31/1/14 Quantum Theory is strange, to such an extent that even Albert Einstein couldnt accept it. Sayings to the eect that- if one is not troubled by Quantum Theory, then (s)he doesnt understand it, are rampant. But with three (possibly more in some cases) courses down in Quantum Mechanics, the strangeness wears o and a new intuition is cultivated. The goal of the presentation is to bring some of that unease with QM back.We will begin with the EPR paradox. This will be followed by a discussion on the Bells inequality and the GHZ experiment. The experiments will be discussed in an accessible unconventional manner, followed by a mathematical treatment to the extent that time permits.
