One must not be greed
THE DOCTOR
- at first,he does not want to give a treatment to coyotito
because he knows Kino will not be able to pay him.
- after the discovery of the pearl of the world,the
doctor suddenly becomes concerned about
Coyotito.

KINO
-he wants so much from the sale of the pearl.
The importance of the family unit
- Kino looking at his baby and wife when he first
awakes ; Kino awares of his wife’s routine even
though he only hears the sounds and does not see
her.
- they go pearl-fishing ; Juana refuses to leave Kino
when he suggests that she goes to the closest town
while he tries to mislead trackers.
- Kino also maintains close ties with his brother,Juan
Thomas.
 Objection with objects of a material nature

- Kino becomes obsessed with the pearl as he sees it as a way


out of poverty.
- He ignores Juana’s pleas to get rid of it and puts the family in
danger.
 False appearances

- when the pearl is first discovered,it provides a vision of a


bright future for Kino but later it shows all the negative and
dark side of things.
- many people of La Paz such as the priest,the doctor and the
pearl buyers are deceitful.
 Honour and respect

- for Kino and the pearl fishers,the canoe is their means


of survival.
- when he finds his canoe damaged,Kino feels great
sorrow and rage that someone could do such a thing.
 Equality

- the people of Spanish descent who live in the


town treat the Mexican-Indians like animals.
