Why English is important

IF YOU are currently learning English in a school, college or institute of further education, you
join approximately one billion other people around the world who are engaged in the same
pursuit. owe!er, as you try to memorise proper grammar, and try to a!oid the mista"es
common to most students of English, you may wonder why you are learning the language in the
first place.
#o, why is English important$
%fter &andarin, English is spo"en by more people than any other language, and is the nati!e
language of more than '() million people. &ore people spea" English than those who spea" the
%rabic and French languages combined.
&oreo!er, English is the international language of diplomacy, business, science, technology,
ban"ing, computing, medicine, a!iation, U* + *%,O armed forces, engineering, tourism,
ollywood films and arguably the best pop and roc" music in the world.
English has plenty of words to choose from. In fact, an English spea"er is offered the biggest
!ocabulary of any language with a choice of ()),))) to -,))),))) words .including technical
and scientific terms/.
0ut don1t panic, most English spea"ers do !ery well with a !ocabulary of around 2),))) words.
English can be fun too. For instance, the music of such stars as El!is 3resley, ,he 0eatles, 4ed
5eppelin, &ichael 6ac"son and &adonna has encouraged fans to spea" the language of their
idols, whilst others ha!e enrolled in English classes to impro!e their understanding of the
dialogue in films and ,7 shows.
Or perhaps they ha!e embraced English to enjoy the writing of #tephen 8ing, 9eorge Orwell or
6.8. :owling. ,hey may e!en ha!e an interest in spea"ing English just to con!erse with
tra!ellers from other countries, who communicate by using the English global interlingua while
tra!elling abroad.
Finally, if you are studying English at school, college or uni!ersity, remember that getting an ;%1
grade in English is almost worthless, in terms of communication, if you cannot spea" the
language. #po"en English is used in the best careers, the best uni!ersities, and is increasingly
being used at job inter!iews. #o li"e it or not, English is a !ery important language to learn how
to spea".
