Interest Packet: this term represents a first approach to the Spanish language for many students. It is a
unique and exciting opportunity for the student to enjoy her/himself learning one of the most spoken
languages in our world. Students will be exposed to the Spanish language in class and will benefit from it.
Outcome: Student learns to introduce him/herself, to ask who someone is, to introduce others and to say
where he/she and others are from. Student learns to say greetings to others and to ask how they are. Student
learns to identify subjects and verbs in the sentences and is able to produce simple sentences. Student learns
the numbers 0-31 and is able to give phone numbers, time and date in Spanish.
* In order to adjust the learning outcomes the assignment could be modified by the teacher. Any changes
will be announced to the students.

course, students will be asked to bring extra materials when working on specific projects.
Daily Lesson and Assignment Overview
Day 1 (8/26/14): Presentation and Introduction of the term
Goal: get to know each other, receive assignment and term information packet. Students learn about class
rules and expectations.
Day 2 (8/28/14): Listening and Speaking: Spanish Alphabet
Goal: Students learn the Spanish Alphabet and practice spelling and writing down information. (St. 1.0)
Day 3 (9/1/14): Grammar and use of the verb TO BE with all the pronouns, days of the week and month
Goal: To conjugate the verb SER for each person and to use it to talk about days of the week/month (Com 1.0,
Com 1.1, Cult 1.0)

Day 4 (9/2/14): Grammar structures: Introducing yourself in Spanish culture
Goal: Students learn to ask what is your name, where are you from and how are you. Students introduce
themselves and get to know their classmates. (Con 1.1, Com 1.0, Com 1.1, Cult. 1.0, Cult. 1.1)
Day 5 (9/4/14): Numbers and how to use them (Com. 1.1, Com. 1.2., Cult. 1.1)
Goal: to learn the numbers from 0-31. Students use them for exchanging phone numbers and information.

Goal: Students bring their e-mail and introduce it to the class. Students listen to a conversation between to
Spanish speakers and simulate a real conversation with different classmates.

Goal: Students are presented several short clips about Spanish culture. Students will be engaged in several
activities to find out more about Spanish food, geography, weather and traditions.
Day 13 (9/29/14): Project (preparation) (Com. 1.1, Cult. 1.1, Set. 1.1, St. 1.1)
Goal: Students choose one topic out of the ones presented in the previous class and work in groups to create a
poster on Spain. Each group will be concentrated in different aspects.
Day 14 (9/30/14): Project (presentation) (Com. 1.1, Cult. 1.1, Set. 1.1, St. 1.1)
Goal: Depending on how the different projects are prepared, students give a short introduction to the class
about their group work on Spanish culture.

Day 17 (10/7/14): Reading (Com. 1.1, St. 1.1, Cult 1.2)
Goal: Students learn simple reading techniques to select important information. Students are presented
several short paragraphs in Spanish and learn how to fast select important information related to time, dates,
nationalities and culture.
Day 18 (10/9/14): Grammar and Written Review (Com. 1.1, Cult 1.1, St. 1.1)
Goal: Students practice all the learnt topics throughout the semester with the aid of worksheets and activities
in class.
Day 19 (10/13/14): Listening and Oral Review (Com 1.1, Com. 1.2, Cult. 1.1, St. 1.1)
Goal: Students practice by listening to the Spanish Course CDs and by interviewing each other in class.
Students are presented some play-roles and they chose one and practice speaking in twos and also in groups.
It is optional for any student to do a short speech in front of the class.
Day 20 (10/14/14): Review day to prepare for Final Test
Goal: Students revise for the final test with the help of worksheets and other presented materials
Day 21 (10/16/14): **Final Test** This is the last quiz and will cover all the topics of the term.

Assignments (Homework):
Assignments will be given on a regular basis, after each class. The student will get a credit check grade
by the teacher based on level of completion and effort.
Absolutely no late homework is accepted!
All assignments are to be kept in the 3-ring binder so that the student can review them for quiz/test
preparation. The binder can be collected at any time, so students need to keep their homework, class
notes, in-class assignments, handouts, quizzes, and tests well-organized in their binders.
If a student is absent and therefore fails to present an assignment, a make-up is typically
required. It is the students responsibility to arrange the make-up with the teacher within the allotted

time span. (This time span is usually two days for every day absent, with exceptions for unusual
circumstances verified by parental contact or a doctors note).
Oral Presentations and Participation:
Given that the class has an emphasis on communication skills in Spanish, students will be required to
give an oral presentation. This will be graded on pronunciation, fluency, grammatical structure and
content.
Students will also be required to participate actively in class discussions and activities. Oral
participation is an important factor in the students final grade. Participation grades will be assigned
based on effort, overall command of the language, pronunciation, and attitude in class.
Written Quizzes and Tests:
Tests and quizzes will be graded based on students successful completion of the assessment.
If student misses a quiz or test, a make-up is required. It is the students responsibility to arrange the
make-up with the teacher within the allotted time span. This time span is usually two days for every

Attendance/Class participation:
Regular attendance is essential for the development of language skills. Class time may be one of the
only times that you will be exposed to human interaction in Spanisha major source of language
acquisition. Learning a foreign language is not like other subjects where you may miss classes and still
be able to catch up or study several chapters the night before an exam. Learning a foreign language
largely means developing skills.
Regular or daily practice is essential for the material to sink in and for your new language skills to
develop. So, if you are absent or fail to complete the course assignments, you will not have enough
time to absorb the information and develop the necessary skills, and your grade will reflect it.
Your success in this course depends completely on how much you, the student, commit yourself to
keeping up with assignments and class progression. If things are not coming together, even after
devoting the necessary time, always talk to your instructor for advice. Do not wait until late in the term
to address your concerns.
