GQ Magazine Report

Unit 6: Lo2

GQ magazine is a male style magazine that came into production in
1957. GQ a continuation of Apparel arts magazine that began in 1931.
Apparel arts had a very limited print run as it was really aimed at
fashion industry insiders for them to give advice to their customers.
The popularity from the retail customer made apparel arts fade out and
Gentlemens Quarterly was introduced. This continued until 1967 until it was
rebranded and the rate of publication was changed from quarterly to
monthly.
For Unit 6 LO2 we have asked to research into a magazine of our choice. My
group of three decided that we would do GQ magazine as it is very popular
magazine globally. For our first task we split off separately and researched
different eras of GQ magazine to find out how much it has changed over the
years and how it had changed to suit its target audience. For our
PowerPoint, I analysed the magazines from the 50s 60s and 70s. What I
found in the theses eras is that the layout has
dramatically changed, front covers are very basic and not filled with cover
lines to tell you what was inside the magazine which is very different to what
it is like now. I those eras, you can see that GQs target audience is for
slightly older males then nowadays because of the front covers showing
older men on the front cover. Also in the earlier years they showed less
celebrities on the front cover and used more models.
After we had completed our Presentation, our next task was to create
a questionnaire including both qualitative and quantitative questions
based on the magazine itself. We also provided two front covers and
two content pages within the questionnaire so the people answering
the questionnaire dont have to think what it looks like off the top of
their heads. The quantitative questions we asked provides us with
information like target audience and the social group that the readers
fit into. From our questionnaire we found that the target
audience is 18-35 year olds from a middle class
background. We found that GQ is also an aspiring
magazine as the magazine include adverts for products
and houses that are very premium and expensive,
although people may not be able to afford it, they can
always give themselves inspiration so they can one day be
able to afford those things.
The qualitative question provides us psychographics, likes
and dislikes and beliefs. For one of our questions

regarding the outline of the content, all of the people that we asked said that the layout is
very simple yet attention grabbing and also included interesting and real world stories, also
they said that the front covers are very eye
catching and appealing and different and
better than the older issues, this is one of the
main reasons why they would buy the
magazine.
