Diversity
Before talking about diversity, you need to know what diversity is. Diversity is a state of
difference; variety. Diversity is in everyones life, no matter who you are or where you live. In
my live diversity affects me in many different ways. There are many different types of diversity:
gender and sexual diversity, racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity; generational diversity; and
teaching styles diversity.
Gender and sexual diversity is the differences between people based on their gender and sexual
preference. We all deal with gender and sexual diversity every day. It would be very hard to avoid it,
unless you lock yourself away from the world. This affects me all the time because you cannot get away
from it.
Racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity is the difference between peoples race, ethnicity, and
culture. In Border States there are more diverse populations, based on race, ethnicity, and culture. When
America was first colonized by people from Europe there was a lot of diversity. One example of culture
diversity in my life would be any day at school, going to the grocery or gas station.
Generational diversity is the difference between different generations (ages). The technical
advances of one generation may be vastly different than another. For example an 80 year old may still be
using their old desktop computer, while a 17 year old may use a top of the line smart phone. This could

impact my life because what if a person I need to get in contact with does not use e-mail, but that is my
preferred way of communication.
Teaching styles diversity is the different ways professors teach. Most everyone has experienced
this, because everyone has been to school, or has been taught something. This impacts everyones life
differently; some can learn in only certain way(s), while others can learn in pretty much anyway.
Diversity is not always appreciated. A lot of the time people punish others for their diversities.
They do this through stereotyping, being prejudice, and discriminating. Stereotyping is an oversimplified
opinion of someone or something; we all use this every day, no matter who you are. Prejudice is prejudging a person or situation based on stereotyping; some examples are sexist attitudes, homophobia,
racist attitudes and ageist attitudes. Discrimination occurs when an action is taken on the basis of a
prejudice; if you do not want to be friends with some one based on their sexual orientation you are
discriminating against them.
