Triangle shirt

waist factory
The site that
changed America

By Jake
McKay

Historical Information on the

triangle shirt waist factory:
The main reason why I chose the
triangle shirt waist factory is because on
March 25, 1911 in New York City there
was one of the most deadly fires in the
US history. It was called the Triangle
Fire. 123 women die and 23 from
breathing into much smoke, the fire
burning them, and even some falling
and jumping out of the building to their
death's, that shows that how hope less
they were. The fire started a cigar that
fell on one of the pieces of clothing, the
fire spread so fast because so many
pieces of clothing were all around the
factory on the floor the windowsills
everywhere so it wasnt long before the
fire took over the whole building. There
is over 500 workers working. Most
workers were on 9th floor and the 8th
floor. But when the person that was
operating the building forgot to alarm
the ninth floor that there was a fire so no
one new that their was the fire until the
flames burst thought the floor. Lastly
there would have been more people
alive if the owners didn't lock the doors
to the stairs just because they didn't
want some works stealing little pieces of
clothing. Mean while people are burning
to death!

How the site is

used today.
This picture to your right triangle
shirt waist factory which is now
today called the ASCH building or
also known as the brown building.
This 10 story building is now part
of the campus of NYU which
(stands for new York University).
This building is on Washington
Place between Greene Street and
Washington Square East that
information was provided by
Wikipedia.org. NYU started to use
the building mostly the eighth
floor as a library in classroom that
made 1000 of people learn, that
started in 1916. After that a man
that went by the name Frederick
brown but the building and gave it
to the University of New York. Aka:
NYU in 1929, which then was
renamed the Brown building.
According to Wikipedia.org. In
2002, the building was
incorporated to the silver Center
for arts and science. Lastly in
2003 it was name a NYC
landmark.

The triangle shirt waist

factory, today

People should know about the

triangle shirt waist factory:
People should know about the triangle
shirt waist factory for many reasons one
of those reasons is it was such a
tragedy for all of America. Many
immigrants thought that America would
be a new opportunity a better life for
them. So they came over but when they
got here they quickly realize that was a
lie! They were put into hard work also
known as manual labor and got paid
very little some even only a dollar a
week. The triangle fire was one of the
first of the factories that had a big
tragically killed 146 people. That was a
big marking stone for labor for
immigrants after that many immigrants
and women protested for better working
conditions and not all protests were
made by shouting on the streets a lot of
them were made by points in books and
signs. Even though protesting this point
has been done many times before the
government started to listen because of
what happened in the triangle shirt
waist factory. The government started
making laws that there should be safety
regulations and working conditions
should be a lot better than they are for
sweatshop workers like the workers in
the triangle factory. Who knows if that
never happened maybe us kids would
still be in labor!

Woman on strike against

Heroes and heroines of the

fire:
Clara Lemlich: Was is a hero of the triangle fire
because she inspired so many people to go strike
against the garment industries
Joseph Zito: Was a hero of the triangle fire because
when the fire started he wasnt one to run outside
screaming he worked the elevator up and down on
the first floor to the ninth floor carrying hundreds of
women and children to their safety. That day he
could of die try to help the innocent people
