Reflection Paper
I visited the Ingham county probation office. The worksite I visited was very chaotic,
when I first arrived there were people standing in line to go through the X-ray Machine. We got
cleared to enter the building then we took the elevator to the floor we needed then we waited.
Mrs. Taylor called us in and we had a nice discussion.
A typical day for a probation officer is:
1. They arrive on the site and park their car, they get to park in special spots closer to the
building.
2. Come in and look over a lot of files on the computer, check schedule to see who has to
visit them that day and other plans. Sometimes they have to look and see how often
different people violate and dont fallow certain rules that are imposed on them.
3. The people that she has to look over have to come and visit her, it differs how often a
person has to come and visit her- if youre a lower level offender you have to visit your
officer monthly. If youre a higher level offenders have to visit bi- weekly. The level that
you are is determined by the crime that you committed.

4. She can make random check- ups on other people at the offenders house, she does this so
the offenders stay true to their probation rules and make sure they arent braking the
rules.
5. Go to court with some of the people that violated their probation, if you violate your
probation you have to talk to a judge and try to defend for your self, if you do a good
enough job he may give you another chance, or he could send you to jail or give you
other punishments.
I observed her looking over various files on her computer, she also showed us how her
computer program worked and how she manages all of her files. Mrs. Taylor also took us to the
court rooms so we could watch her co- workers in court. Some of the court cases got crazy, one
case we seen had the violator yelling at the judge so after that happened we went back down to
her office.
I liked the fact that you have a chance to rehabilitate and fix offenders lives, I also like
going to court I thought that was very interesting. Things I didnt like were all the paper work
and files you have to manage.
To get a job as a probation officer you need a bachelors degree in criminal justice and on the
job training. The field is going to have a lot of job opening in the coming years, because they
hired a lot of people in the late 70s and all of those people are getting ready to retire soon. This
career has also changed quite a bit in the last few years because most of the paper work has been
switched over to being on the computer.
I may pursue a career in this field it seems like a very interesting. But it is a lot of schooling
compared to becoming a corrections officer.
