ONTARIO INSTITUTE FOR STUDIES IN EDUCATION

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
Jan. 23 2015

Essa Chang
Essa Chang was a student in my Junior/Intermediate Social Studies methods course at OISE/UT and I was
able to observe her teach during her course time. Essa has a positive and confident attitude about
teaching, along with an extremely professional attitude, and a strong work ethic which suggests that she
will be an excellent educator.
Essa has an excellent understanding of student needs and this was evident in her teaching. She was well
prepared for her lessons, and they were clearly laid out for the students. This helped in their success as
learners. The lesson I observed provided multiple opportunities for students to engage in relevant and
meaningful work and students were encouraged to provide feedback. Her engaging lessons allowed
students to connect personally with the materials. She did this by having the students work together and
engage in critical thinking tasks connected to course materials. The work she produced for her social
studies course for primary grade students reflected her ability to address all the social studies disciplinary
concepts and expectations, and instill the inquiry method into her course materials. She has grasped the
importance of engaging students directly with course work in a creative way in order that they can both
develop important skills, and find relevance to the work they do at school.
Essa takes pride in making meaningful connections with her colleagues and her students; in creating
relevant lessons, and in providing supportive environments. She has strong communication skills and
students respond well to her teaching. A strong academic student, she has maintained a high level of
excellence in our program and her professionalism serves as a model to others in the field.
I would therefore highly recommend Essa as she is a responsible and hardworking student, and is clearly
committed to becoming an outstanding educator.
Sincerely,
