Baltimore City Teaching Residency- Instructor

Experience
Through my previous role as an instructor during the five-week intense
summer program and my current role as a classroom effectiveness coach, I
have had the opportunity to teach the following sessions to first-year
teachers. Below describes the courseworkboth content and skill focused
the hours devoted to the course, and whether I designed or customized the
course.

Teacher Skill Building for Classroom Culture Sessions


(based on Teach Like a Champion Techniques)

100% 6 hours, customized session


o How to create and hold the expectation that 100% of the
students are participating 100% of the way, 100% of the
time.
Positive Framing 6 hours, customized session
o How to make corrections consistently but framed positively
by living in the now, assume the best of students, talking
aspirations to their students.
What to Do clear directions- 9 hours, customized session
o How to give students specific, observable, and sequential
directions with that tells students what to do.
Strong Voice 9 hours, customized session
o How to have the teacher it factor where they enter the
room and are in command through language economy, not
talking over students, squaring up and standing still, and
using quiet power.
Tight Transitions 3 hours, customized session
o How to plan to keep all transitions tight throughout the
lesson to avoid easily wasted time, which leads to
disengaged students and conveys lower expectations.
Entry Routines 3 hours, customized session
o Welcoming students into the class, ideally by name at the
threshold, with a clear entry routine so students have a
clear task to engage in.
No Opt Out 3 hours, customized session
o How to create a successful sequence in your classroom
that begins with a student unable or unwilling to answer
and should end with the student answering that question
as often as possible.
Turn & Talk 3 hours, customized session
o How to use brief partner discussions often throughout a
class to increase student practice in speaking and listening
and increase participation.
Cold Call 3 hours, customized session
o How to plan to call on students regardless of whether or
not they have their hands raised to make engaged
participation the expectation.

First-Day Routines and Procedures, 3 hours, designed session


o How and when to roll out procedures for the first day and
week of school in a clear, engaging way.

English Language Arts Content Sessions

Unit-planning: Creating a Scope and Sequence 6 hours,


designed session
o How to backwards plan to achieve common core objectives
and goals in a timely manner, including formative and
summative assessments and analysis of student data to
instruct future planning.
Strategic Grouping 3 hours, designed session
o How to group students effectively based on achievement
data, interpersonal skills, and specific strengths to get the
most out of group work.
Crunching Data 3 hours, designed session
o How to use data from formative and summative
assessments to organize lessons for enrichment and
remediation.
Incorporating the Common Core and objective-driven lessons 9
hours, designed session
o Aligning all lessons (and all PARTS of a lesson) to Common
Core goals where students clearly demonstrate mastery of
the objective at the end.
Writing- Planning 3 hours, designed session
o How to create an organized, engaging lesson where
students brainstorm and research writing topics that lead
to one cohesive work.
Writing- Drafting 3 hours, designed session
o How to create an organized, engaging lesson where
students begin the drafting process efficiently and
effectively.
Writing- Revising and Editing 3 hours, designed session
o How to create an organized, engaging lesson where
students self- and peer-revise, then self- and peer-edit,
with and without technology.
Writing- Publishing with Technology 3 hours, designed session
o How to create opportunities and roll-out expectations for
using technology to publish writing.
Text-Dependent Questioning 3 hours, designed session
o How to create text-dependent questions that scaffold and
build using Blooms Taxonomy, shifting more of the
cognitive work and participation onto students rather than
the teacher.

Push and Support Questioning 3 hours, customized session


o How to differentiate a lesson through questioning for
different-level learners.
The Art of a Sentence 3 hours, customized session
o How to ensure that students can write one complex, wellcrafted sentence every class to increase rigor in daily
lessons.
Control the Game and Annotations 3 hours, designed session
o How to ensure that students are reading often in class and
are engaged in the material through audible reading and
note-taking.
Socratic Seminars 3 hours, designed session
o How to structure, organize, and empower students to
discuss topics at a high level of analysis, debate, focusing
on the speaking and listening Common Core objectives
strand.
Cornell Notes 3 hours, designed session
o How to roll-out Cornell Notes, when to use them, and how
to re-enforce their use for students.

Training Received for BCTR Positions


I have received intense training to ensure my effectiveness in my roles as an
instructor and a classroom effectiveness coach. Additionally, The New
Teacher Project and Baltimore City Teaching Residency value ongoing
feedback as a vital part of improving the quality of coaches and instructors in
the organization, and is a regular part of daily life at BCTR.

time to spend with each, which outside resources to leverage,
and what Principal partnership looks like
