Lesson Plan Grade 11

Activity: Job Readiness Hard Skills Unit- Lesson #3: Resumes and Cover Letters
Grade(s): 11

Time: 30-45 minutes

Learning Objective(s):
1. Students will understand the purpose of a resume and cover letter.
2. Students will be able to identify personal characteristics that they can contribute to an
employment setting and how to present these professionally.
3. Students will be able identify the difference between a functional and chronological
resume.
Materials: Computer Lab; Handout- Sample Job Resumes & Cover Letter; HandoutGuideline for Key Points to Address in Cover Letters
Procedure:
1. Students will meet with counselor in the computer lab or use their own laptop for this
lesson.
2. Counselor will begin the class by handing out the sample resume and cover letters.
Students will be asked to review each, and discussion will begin on the purpose of a resume
and cover letter. The counselor can personalize the discussion by using her own resume
and cover letter so that students can relate, or allow them to provide examples of things that
they can put on a resume to make them more marketable- volunteer activities, honors,
church/extracurricular activities, etc.
3. Counselor will provide an interactive lesson on how to create a resume, going through
each section on the computer through the projector with students. Specific attention should
be given to formatting and the importance of each section, as well as the difference between
a functional and chronological resume and when each should be used.

4. Counselor will provide students with the handout on Key Points to Address in a Cover
Letter. Students will be asked to provide a few examples of positive characteristics that they
have to market themselves for future employment opportunities.
5. The counselor can provide students with information at the end to online resources
available to them to assist with developing a resume and cover letter.

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?


Process Data: All student in Grade 11 will participate in this Unit- Lesson 3 of 4. Counselor
will take note of students in attendance per class.
Perception Data: Attitude: Percentage of students who believe that they have
characteristics to market themselves as qualified job applications. Skills: Percentage of
students who can successfully develop a resume and cover letter that can be used in a job
search. Knowledge: Percentage of students who can identify what the purpose of a resume
and cover letter are in the job search. Percentage of students who can distinguish between a
functional and chronological resume.
Outcome Data: Increased ability to complete a resume successfully. Increased ability to
complete a cover letter. Students can successfully complete both documents to help in their
job search.
Follow Up: Counselor can have students submit a professional resume and cover letter with
their career portfolio. They will also submit them as an assignment to their American
Literature teacher for review.
