PREFACE

This book of verse has been compiled as a family memento so

that it may be passed to future generations. Most of the poems
have been written from actual events as well as things that were
said and done by people that I have met.

From my early childhood to this present day my life has been

based on country living, country music and a loving family. My
early years of Schooling at Tallong Public School (“Journey back
to Tallong”) and further education at Coolamon (“Country
Barbers”)and “Return to Coolamon”) played an important part of
my childhood adventures.

After leaving School, I worked as a carpenter’s labourer, before

turning to what most young men in the Coolamon District were
employed in. Hay carting, chaff cutting, general farmhand work
and a little bit of rouseabouting in the local shearing sheds. I even
tried my hand at making pick handles at a saw mill in Laurel Hill
near Batlow. Following in my Fathers footsteps I decided to apply
for the NSW Railways, and successfully became a Station
Assistant assigned firstly, to Ganmain and then to Junee.
However, as a young man I needed something more exciting than
the Railway, so I moved to Wollongong and began digging
trenches and sewerage lines for the Water Board before it was
suggested by my soon to be Father-in-law, to join the Army. It was
during my early Army service that I became interested in Poetry
writing.

My service with the Australian Regular Army from 1964 to 1984

gave me many inspirations and subjects to write about, and my
service in particular with the Fifth Battalion Royal Australian
Regiment (5 RAR) both in Australia and Vietnam presented many
moments that I will never forget (“Tigers In The Sky” and “Battle
Of Long Tan”).

After completing a little over twenty years with the Army, it was
time to make the move back to civilian life, and so I became, what
most ex Servicemen become.... a Security Officer firstly employed
by Wormald Security and then Group 4 Security.

During my employment with Wormald at the Mack Trucks Guard

site I met a lot of interesting people, but in particular I met Sam
Parker (“Senile Sam the Guardsman”, “True Blue Sam”). Sam and
I became good mates, and him being a poet of renown, we often
communicated to each other in verse. It was Sam who inspired me
to continue writing and encouraged me to write this book.

To Sam Parker and the many friends that I have met who have
presented me with the subjects to write about, I thank you and I
trust that the good Lord will give me plenty more time to continue
in an activity that I dearly love.

DEDICATION

Throughout my life, I have been blessed with a loving family,

Mother.. Vera, Father. Cecil, Grandfather.. George, Grandmother.
Lillian all of whom are now deceased, but all gave me tremendous
love and guidance in the relatively short time that I had with them.
My Step family, Brothers Clarry (deceased), Len and Ken and
Sisters Lee and Val. My sister Norelle and Brothers Gregory
(Deceased) and Jeffery all combine to make a wonderful family.

I met Rhonda Beattie in early 1964, (“Rhonda Alicia Lyons”) and

she became my wife on 1 January 1966 just prior to my departure
for Vietnam. She has been my true inspiration and gave me
tremendous support and encouragement throughout my tour of
Vietnam and in all my other ventures. She is a truly loving wife
and I will always love her more than any thing in the world.
Together, Rhonda and I have raised two wonderful children,
Shane born 3 March, 1968 and Teresa born 18 August, 1970. Both
are truly loved and we are very proud of them.
We are now the very proud Grandparents of Twins, Teagan and
Tynelle, born 12 March, 1992 to Shane and Janelle, Stephanie,
born 10 October 1997, Caitlyn born 14 July 2003 to Shane and
Kalee and Lily, born 19 May 2001 to Karl and Teresa

I have been lucky enough to have what I consider the best “in-
laws” in the world. Father and Mother in-law, Stan and Sybil
Beattie (both deceased), accepted me into their family and treated
me as their own. It was Stan (“Mr. Stanley Beattie”), who
encouraged me to join the Army which helped me to get to where I
am today.
Lorraine Lane, wife of Clarry Sheather. Lillian Lyons, wife of Len
Sheather. Pat Maher, husband of Lee Sheather. Colin Barlow,
husband of Val Sheather. Marjorie Carey, wife of Ken Sheather.
Jack Screen, husband of Norelle Lyons. Janice Holton, wife of Jeff
Lyons. Janelle McCarthy (deceased), fiancé of Shane Lyons.
Kalee Donaldson, wife of Shane Lyons. Karl Pacey, husband of
Teresa Lyons. Michael Beattie, husband of Michelle Suddick.

I have numerous Uncles, Aunts, Nephews and Nieces, too many

to list here. However, they have all been and still are an important
part of my life. I have indeed been honoured to be part of this
great family, and for their love and friendship I will always be truly
grateful.

I dedicate this book of verse to my wonderful family.

The Tin Hat
It’s commonly known as a helmet but it’s been through a
mountain of strife,
It’s dinted and battered and well battle scarred from the action it’s
seen in its life.
Fought in battles with “three os’, and Brens, with Owens and
SLRs too,
It’s fought off grenades and artillery shells, there’s not much it
hasn’t been through.

The colour has varied with olive drab paint and it’s covered with
Hessian and scrim
It’s worn to offer protection to the head that it carries within.
The shape has changed from battles of old, but its purpose is
always the same,
Call it a helmet, a bonnet or lid, but Tin hat will long be its name.

Salute to the men who have fallen whilst wearing the old “Tit for
Tat”
And good luck to the diggers still serving and still wearing the
Bloody Tin Hat.

TERESA

On the eighteenth day of August, on a snow capped Wagga morn.

In the year of nineteen seventy, Teresa Lyons was born.
A blue eyed little daughter, to a happy Mum and Dad.
And a little baby sister, for Shane our only lad.

She became the final link of love, in our happy family chain.
A link that won't be broken, and a love that will not wane.
Throughout her early childhood, and through the teenage years,
We've shared a mostly happy time, and shared a few odd tears.

She'll always be our sweetheart, our Princess, or our Queen.

And always have the title, of our lovely "TREES-R-GREEN"
Today as she turns twenty one, we give to her this key.
And wish her all the very best, with love from Mum, Shane and
me.

SENILE SAM MEETS CANE TOAD
Have you ever stopped to wonder as you move down life’s long road,
If Senile Sam the Guardsman met the little Cane Toad.
He did as I remember when toad was out of luck,
Cause Senile Sam the Guardsman drove the fatal truck.

While Toad was looking left and right old Sam was leaving home,
He couldn’t put his mind at rest his thoughts were on a poem.
He drove the truck at steady speed along the dark wet road,
And never thought he’d ever cause the death of a little Cane Toad.

The truck veered to the gutter old Sam he felt a bump

He must have hit the Cane Toad just as it made a jump.
He hit the brakes and skidded but didn’t skid too far
And left the imprint of the toad in the wet and greasy tar.

Senile Sam climbed from the truck to practice what he gained

He’d bring the Cane Toad back to life cause Sam was first aid trained.
He gave resuscitation until his face turned red
But finally had to give it up cause poor old Toad was dead.

Toad has gone where all toads go when they have passed away.
And Senile Sam the Guardsman remained at M.T.A.
Guarding all the “Bulldog Macks”, old Sam the senile bloke,
Perhaps he’ll meet the toad again when comes his turn to “CROAK”
