1. Rock and Roll - It is one of the genres of the popular music which started and
developed in the United States on the late 1940s and early 1950s. It came from a
combination of predominantly African-American genres and with Western swing
and country music. The genre acquired its name on the 1950s. It is characterized
by a heavy beat and simple melodies, usually based on a twelve-bar structure and
an instrumentation of guitar, bass, and drums.

2. Rock music It is a genre of popular music which first started as rock and roll
in the United States in the 1950s and evolved into a range of variety styles in the
1960s. It was heavily influenced by blues, rhythm and country music. Rock is a
song-based music usually with a 4/4 time signature using a verse-chorus form, but
the genre has become extremely diverse. It places a higher degree of emphasis
on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop
music.
Example: "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"- The Rolling Stones (1965)

3. Folk Rock It is a musical genre which is a combination of the elements of folk


music and rock music. The genre arose in the United States and the UK around
the mid-1960s.The term folk rock was first coined by the U.S. music press to
describe The Byrds music in June 1965.
The genre was pioneered by the Los Angeles band The Byrds, who began playing
traditional folk music and Bob Dylan-penned material with rock instrumentation,
in a style heavily influenced by The Beatles and other British bands.
Example: Like A Rolling Stone- Bob Dylan (1965)
4. Psychedelic Rock- It is a style of rock music that is influenced by psychedelic culture and seeks
to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs. It often uses new
recording techniques and effects and sometimes draws on sources such as the ragas and drones of
Indian music.It was pioneered by musicians including the Beatles, the Byrds, and the Yardbirds,
emerging as a genre during the mid-1960s among folk rock and blues rock bands in the United

Kingdom and United States.It reached a peak in between 1967 and 1969 with the Summer of Love and
Woodstock Rock Festival.
