What Is This

Halloween Thing?

History Of The Word

HalloweenorHallowe'en
dates to about 1745and
is of Christian origin.The
word "Halloween" means
"hallowed evening" or
"holy evening".It comes
from a Scottish term
forAll Hallows' Eve(the
evening beforeAll
Hallows' Day).Over
time,(All) Hallow(s)
E(v)enevolved
intoHalloween.

Hallowmas
Halloween falls on the evening before
theChristianholy days ofAll Hallows'
Dayon November 1 andAll Souls'
Dayon November 2, thus giving the
holiday on October 31 the full name
ofAll Hallows' Eve.Since the time of
theprimitive Church, major feastsin
theChristian Church(such
asChristmas,EasterandPentecost)
hadvigilswhich began the night
before, as did the feast of All
Hallows.These three days are
collectively referred to
asHallowmasand are a time for
honoring thesaintsand praying for
the recently departedsoulswho have
yet to reach Heaven.

Another
Explanantion

Evolving from the ancient

Celtic holiday of Samhain,
modern Halloween has
become less about literal
ghosts and ghouls and more
about costumes and candy.
The Celts used the day to
mark the end of the harvest
season and the beginning of
winter, and also believed
that this transition between
the seasons was a bridge to
the world of the dead. Over
the millennia the holiday
transitioned from a somber
pagan ritual to a day of

Why Pumpkins?
Jack-o'-lanternsare
traditionally carried by
guiserson All Hallows' Eve
in order to frightenevil
spirits. In Ireland and
Scotland, theturniphas
traditionally been carved
during Halloween, but
immigrants toNorth
Americaused the
nativepumpkin, which is
both much softer and much
larger making it easier to
carve than a turnip.

What Went Wrong?

Halloween turned
into an evil tradition
due to many factors.
Some reasons are
peoples fascination
with scary ideas,
Hollywood movies,
commercialism, but
mainly from groups
with the opposite
ideals as Christianity.

What Can We Do?

Halloween is close to
Thanksgiving so
maybe we can
continue the
tradition of being
thankful for the
harvest and with
what we are blessed.
Its up to you to
understand what you
are celebrating and
why you celebrate it.

Should We Avoid It?

We shouldnt run in fear from Halloween. We shouldnt let
those people who go too far ruin a day where we can get
together as a community and have a great time.
Get outside. Enjoy your children. Enjoy your neighbors.
Dont shut yourself inside somewhere loathing in your own
self righteousness.
Remember It was the religious people who also
condemned Jesus for eating with sinners. He didnt hide. He
didnt run. He sat and ate.
Be that Christian who opens their door, not the one who
closes it to elements of the world we dont like.
