Halloween falls on the evening before
theChristianholy days ofAll Hallows'
Dayon November 1 andAll Souls'
Dayon November 2, thus giving the
holiday on October 31 the full name
ofAll Hallows' Eve.Since the time of
theprimitive Church, major feastsin
theChristian Church(such
asChristmas,EasterandPentecost)
hadvigilswhich began the night
before, as did the feast of All

Why Pumpkins?
Jack-o'-lanternsare
traditionally carried by
guiserson All Hallows' Eve
in order to frightenevil
spirits. In Ireland and
Scotland, theturniphas
traditionally been carved
during Halloween, but
immigrants toNorth
Americaused the
nativepumpkin, which is
both much softer and much
larger making it easier to
carve than a turnip.
Halloween is close to
Thanksgiving so
maybe we can
continue the
tradition of being
thankful for the
harvest and with
what we are blessed.
Its up to you to
understand what you
are celebrating and
why you celebrate it.
