Herniation of nucleus pulposus


A tear can occur within the annulus fibrosus
through which the material of the nucleus
pulposus can track. After a period of time, this
material may track into the vertebral canal or
into the intervertebral foramen to impinge on
neural structures.

Sprain
Injury to a ligament caused by sudden
overstretching.

Dislocation
Displacement from their normal position of
bones meeting at a joint such that there is
complete loss of contact of the joint surfaces.

Arthritis
Inflammation of one or more joints characterized
by: pain, swelling, warmth, redness of the
overlying skin and diminished range of joint
motion.

Spina bifida
A developmental defect in which the newborn
baby has part of spinal cord and its coverings
exposed through a gap in the backbone.
