Principals News

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to the Sweetwater High School
Academies. Our program is one of the greatest in the district and the knowledge
and the skills students will acquire throughout their years in the program will
prepare them to be college and career ready.

In my nineteen years in the district, I have been fortunate enough to witness
many outstanding programs throughout our different schools, but our Academies

truly have all the components of an exceptional program. Teachers are wellprepared to instruct students and teach them the necessary skills they will need to
be successful in college and in the career they may choose. Teachers attend
workshops and conferences to make their teaching practices exceptional. The
program also offers students the hands-on experiences they may not get
anywhere else. The combination of instruction students receive on a daily basis
plus the skills they are learning make them extremely marketable for whatever
profession they may pursue.

I would like to thank you for your support of our programs and hope you will
continue to extend your assistance when needed. As a graduate of Sweetwater
High School, I am proud to be part of our Academies and will always do what I
can to help a program grow.

NOMAR
Conference
A group of Hispanic leaders
decided there was a need for a
group to address the issues of
employment and civil rights for
Hispanic Americans. The need
became NOMAR (National
Organization for Mexican
American Rights) and their
mission is to find solutions to
problems students may face while
obtaining employment and
education.
On September 1, Ms. Diaz, Ms.
Sphar and fifty Academy students
attended the NOMAR conference.
Elizabeth Menses, one of our

very own SUHI students, was
awarded a $250 NOMAR
scholarship at the conference.

Padre Night
Every year Ms. Natalia Diaz
continues a special tradition with
her students that began when she
was fifteen.
On October 22, 2015 students
fundraised at Petco Park by selling
tickets for a raffle. Lucky winners
of the sixteenth annual Shirts Off
Their Back Ceremony became the
proud owners of a jersey signed
and worn by one of the players.

Partner Event
Sometimes students know they
want a profession in the medical
field and then they realize the vast
amount of choices available.
That is why the Academies created
a partner event with professionals
from the medical field (nurses,

experience. I feel good about being

able to raise money for a good
cause and help the community at
the same time. I recommend this
event to everyone looking to have a
great time and do community
service.

share their profession with the
students. In fifteen-minute sessions,
small rotating groups (8-10) of
students are able to learn the basics
of a profession, understand the
educational path needed and ask
burning questions.
The event took place on October
21, 2015 with great success.

Academy BBQ
The Academy BBQ on October 25,
2015 was hot in more ways than
one!

Mr. Sphar wielded their flaming

spatulas to produce crispy
hamburgers and hotdogs and Ms.
Sphar, Ms. Cruz, Ms. E. Diaz, Ms.
N. Diaz, Mr. Fajardo and Ms.
Schreier were also in attendance to
serve buns, cookies and drinks.
Families and students mingled on
the grass and a raffle was held. A
few lucky winners took home
Starbucks gift cards and Padre
tickets. It was a great way to begin
the year!

important information with families
in the theatre. It was immediately
followed by a BBQ enjoyed outside
in the lunch area. Mr. Diaz and

established a position of leadership

in the san Diego community for
their efforts of support to local
organizations and charities. I am
fortunate to have participated as a
volunteer for several years in the
annual Shirts Off their Backs
Program. Now, I am extremely
fortunate to have the opportunity to
involve the Academy students in
these volunteer efforts, which
enhances the lives of both our
community and my students.

Welding / Engineering
The Welding/Engineering
Academy is a fabrication or
sculptural process. Students learn
the fundamentals of how to join

materials, causing fusion, from
high temperature and metal joining
techniques.
Engineering class combines the
fields of science and math to solve
real world problems that improve
the world around us. What really
distinguishes engineers is their
ability to implement ideas in an
effective and practical approach.
In September the Welding &
Engineering Academy attended a
field trip to Training Resources
Limited (TRL), a professional
Maritime training facility in
engineering, firefighting, and
electrical and damage control.
