Vocabulary

Applique- to sew one piece of fabric on top of another

Embroider- decorate cloth by sewing patterns on it with thread
Eye- opening in the needle for the thread to pass through
Felt-a textile that is produced by matting and pressing fibers together. Felt can be made of natural fibers such as
wool or synthetic fibers such as acrylic.
Seam allowance-the area between the edge of the fabric and the stitching
Stitch- a loop of thread resulting from a single pass or movement of the needle in sewing
Thread-a long thin strand of cotton, nylon or other fibers used in swing or weaving

Hint
When threading the needle, do not tie a knot at the eye
of the needle. Try one of these options instead. Tie the
two ends of the thread together forming a loop. (This
method uses twice as much thread.) Or, tie a knot at
one end of the piece of thread and sew with a single
strand. If you try this method you have to hold onto
the thread as you pull the needle. If you forget to hold
the thread as you pull the needle, the thread will pull
out of the needle.
