Repeat Patterns

This document provides instructions for creating a repeat pattern by cutting paper into sections and rearranging the pieces. The steps include: 1. Drawing a design in the center of a paper page. 2. Cutting the page vertically into two pieces and rearranging them. 3. Cutting the page horizontally into two more pieces and rearranging them. 4. Scanning the paper to digitize the design. 5. Using image editing software to transform the design into a repeat pattern that can be used digitally.

Repeat Patterns

by Mrs Backhouse

Step 1.
Draw your design in the
centre of your page. It does
not have to be symmetrical.
Just dont draw over the
edges of the page, keep it
in the middle.

Step 2 & 3.
Cut down the exact centre
of your page vertically.
Measure out the centre
points (dont fold the
paper). Then use a craft
knife and steel rule to
carefully cut the paper in
half.
Swap the sides over and
use sticky tape along the
reverse to stick the two
pieces together again.

Step 4 & 5.
Cut your page exactly in
half again but along the
horizontal this time. Again:
measure, cut with craft
knife and steel rule
carefully.
Swap the sides over and
tape on the reverse.

Step 6.
Draw the rest of your
design in the new middle
space.
Step 7.
Scan your image onto the
computer.

Step 8.
Open up your scanned
jpeg in GIMP

Step 9.
Go to the bar along the top and
hover over colours then in the
dropdown menu select
Threshold.. A pop up box will
appear for you to tweak the
threshold level. When your
picture is pure black and white
click OK.

Step 10.
Use the pencil tool
with a size of around
03.00 depending on
you line thickness.
With the pencil tool fill
in any gaps you can
see in you drawing.
Step 11.
Use the eraser tool to
get rid of any
unwanted lines from
the joins in the paper.

Step 12.
Use the bucket fill tool to fill
in areas with colour. Do this
until you have coloured you
whole design. You may find
it easier to fill small areas if
you zoom in.

Step 12 after everything

has been coloured.

Step 13.

Go to Filters and on the

dropdown menu hover over Map
and then select Tile.
A pop up bow will appear. Unlock
the ratio and change the unit to
percentage.
Make the percentage the number
of repeats you want. 100% is one
tile, so 500% x 500% will give you
a 5 across by 5 down repeat tile.

Step 14.
You now have your finished
repeat pattern.
Go to File and then Export.
This is how you save your
image as a jpeg. If you go to
Save rather than Export it
will save your image as a xcf
file which can only be
opened in GIMP.
