    against the environment

    Why is green crime a global issue?

    Green crime as global


    The planet is a single eco-system
    Pollution in one country could turn into acid
    rain in another

    Chernobyl disaster

    It is proof that modern day dangers are actually man
    made and as a result of our own actions as opposed to a
    result of natural causes.

    Beck (1992)

    The modern world means that we manufacture enough for


    everybody in the (at least Western) world.
    The rise in productivity and technology has resulted in
    new risks to society
    Many of these risks are towards the environment (climate
    change)
    These risks are global in nature, leading Beck to call the
    world a global risk society.

    Is climate change a crime?

    Traditional Criminologists

    Situ and Emmons (2000) - environmental crime


    is an unauthorised act or omission that
    violates the law.
    Could you argue now that environmental problems are a
    crime?

    Traditional Criminologists Critique


    It is a clearly defined subject matter
    The definitions come from powerful groups (such as
    businesses) which have their own agenda.
    What could this agenda be? Why?

    Can legal definitions always be relied


    on when looking at criminal issues that
    involve the world?

    Green Criminologists
    Concentrates on the harm caused rather than the law it is breaching

    White (2008) criminology is any action which harms the physical


    environment and /or the human and non-human animals within it
    even if no law has been broken.
    Green criminology builds on the work on traditional criminology and
    brings in other theories to include new issues.

    There are two views of environmental harm


    Anthropocentric
    White (2008) talks
    of a human centred
    view of environmental
    harm. This assumes
    that humans have the
    right to dominate
    nature for their own
    means.

    Ecocentric
    Humans and the
    environment depend on
    each other, so green
    crimes affect humans
    too.
