Topic API 676 Pump Nozzle Loads

The document discusses increasing the allowable loads on API 676 pump nozzles beyond 1 times the standard. It provides process parameters for an existing pump being replaced due to higher capacity needs with space constraints preventing line routing changes. The responses recommend discussing increasing allowable loads with mechanical engineering during the RFQ process by providing a piping stress isometric and load data to demonstrate feasibility. They also note some pump manufacturers may already support higher standard loads without redesign depending on the specific pump model.

In this revamp project existing pumps are replaced with new high capacity pumps .Due to space constraint major line
routing change to meet 1 X API 676 is not possible. As per client specification use of expansion bellows shall be
avoided.
Does anyone has past experience in such case, Can vendor increase the Allowable loads more than 1 times of API
676.

Hi Juber,
This depends on your equipment delivery status. If you are in the earlier RFQ process you can ask the Mec
Department to include this requirement in the RFQ. Since the vendors will be interested in take the RFP they

will be more receptive. You the equipment is already purchased , they will ask for a big increasing on the
price.
In your case, since you already know the layout it will be good and convicente if you include a easy to
understand piping stress isometric labeled with existing piping to be connect, including a table with all the
possible piping loads over nozzle, so they can see a very low Sustained load (which is always easy to get) ,
no so low Expansion loads, the case of pump working and pump on shut down , etc.
Talk with your Mechanical Department first.

Hi Juber,
To add to Antonio's comment, from my past experience working for a pump manufacturer, it's possible that
their standard pump casing design already allows for larger allowable loads, so when customers ask for 2X
API loads for example, they don't have to do any redesign work of the pump.
In my case, our standard API 610 BB1, BB2 and multistage pump casings and nozzles could handle 2X API
610 nozzle loads. We did definitely charge extra when 2X is specified, and the higher loads are factored into
the custom baseplate design.
