    TUTORIAL 5 & 6
    [BELT DRIVE & GEAR DRIVE]

    1.

    A pulley is 15cm in a diameter mounted on induction motor shaft running at 950rpm


    drives a main shaft at 300 rpm by belt drive and located 2.0m apart. The belt is 5mm
    thickness and 15cm wide. Determine:
    (a) the velocity of the belt in m/s if there is no slip and belt is not elastic.
    (b) the size of the pulley on the main shaft if there is slip of 4%
    (c) the length of the belt required in meter.
    [Answer : (a) v = 7.461m/s (b) d2 = 0.466m (c) L = 5.015m]

    2.

    The diameter of a pulley on the driving shaft rotating at 450rpm is 180cm.


    countershaft is to be driven with 400cm diameter by an open belt drive. 23.5kW
    power is needed to be transmit from driver pulley to driven pulley. The thickness
    the belt is 5.3 mm and the density of belt material is 0.9 x 10 3kg/m3.The angle
    contact between the belt and pulley 180 cm diameter is 150 and the coefficient
    friction is 0.30. The safe working stress for belt is 380 N/cm2, determine:
    (a) the velocity of the belt in m/s.
    (b) the required belt width.
    [Answer : (a) v = 42.41m/s (b) b = 8.8cm]

    Calculate the pitch circle diameter, the diameter of the addendum circle, and diameter
    of the dedendum circle for a 20, full depth , involve spur gear with 18 teeth has a
    diametral pitch of 0.5 /mm
    [Answer : d = 36mm, da = 40mm, db = 31 mm]

    4.

    A gear train is shown in the diagram 1. The gear has the following properties: t2 = 18
    teeth; t3 = 72 teeth; PD = 0.4 /mm; t4 = 16 teeth and PD = 0.3 /mm and t5 = 48 teeth.
    Determine the velocity of gear 5, as a gear 2 drives at 1200 rpm, clockwise. Also
    determine the center distance between gear 2 and 5.
    [Answer : 5 = 10.47 rad/s,clockwise; C = 219 mm]
