    AESTHETICS AND ORDER: Urban Beautification and Development in the Philippines

    THE CONCEPT GUIDE
    I.

    ABSTRACT
    This forum seeks to examine the effects of aesthetics to a citys development.
    At the beginning of the 20th Century, the City Beautiful movement sought to
    improve the living conditions and civic virtues of the residents of urban areas
    through city beautification. It aims to evoke yearnings for an ideal community and
    civic loyalty in the citizens, thus establishing a sense of order in the society. As
    sanitation, beautification and health conditions of densely populated cities have
    become issues of concern, urban beautification has been used to address such
    issues. However, it has been witnessed that efforts being undertaken in relation to
    urban beautification has been both insufficient and ineffective to address the
    problems in a sustainable manner. Aside from the lack of work with regard to urban
    beautification, the citizens reactions to aesthetics differ, causing a varied impact on
    the order it seeks to establish.

    II.

    OBJECTIVES
    This forum aims to:

    understand the significance of city beautification to impart the

    history to the present generation and to look and to move forward to the
    future.

    compare and contrast the changes made to the different cities in the

    Philippines in particular, to Metro Manila.

    have a sound perspective on how aesthetics influences order and

    vice versa.

    appreciate how the past culture, traditions and customs are affected,

    changed and improved by the presence of the cities as witnesses of change.

    III.

    CONTENT OVERVIEW

    define city beautification, its history and its future.

    discuss the benefits and consequences of aesthetics and order in the

    development of cities.

    explain and understand why and how cities undergo changes.

    differentiate aesthetics from order, their significance and how these

    elements relate to urban beautification and development.

    compare the progress of urban beautification and development in the

    Philippines to the global contexts.
