NAPLAN

Amber Medina

What is NAPLAN?
The National Assessment Program for Numeracy and
Literacy (NAPLAN) is test that is given to students in
Grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 Australia wide each year. These
students are tested in the areas of reading, writing,
language convections and numeracy.
NAPLAN is developed and managed by ACARA (Australian
Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting authority). (NAP,
2013).

What does it look like?

The test is comprised of questions that are in line
with the standards the students should be meeting
for English and Maths.
Both tests are made up of multiple choice and short
answer questions the writing section of the test
requires the students to write a text in a specified
genre, it could be either narrative, persuasive or
informative, in response to a prompt.

What is it used for?

NAPLAN test results and data are used to provide
information for students, parents, teachers and
principals about student achievement which can be
used to inform teaching and learning programs
(NAP, 2013)
NAPLAN data is also published on the My School
website creating an added pressure for the school
to perform well.

What are the positives?

The data can be used in a positive way, whether the
education department uses it to see a lapse in an
area that is Australia wide or state wide that needs
extra support for improvement. The data can be
used at school level to see an area of weakness and
improvement for that school or year level. Then on
a deeper level individual teachers can use it as a
way of planning to meet the students needs.

What are the negatives?

NAPLAN is creating a concern for parents, wanting their students to perform
well. It adds added pressure for teachers and extreme pressure for students in
the lead up to the test.
It can be said that some teachers and school are less focused on true learning,
rather, they are teaching to the test.
The My School website is turning NAPLAN into a competition as such; schools are
defined by their results when new families are looking for schools, a spiral effect
occurs- poor NAPLAN results = decline in enrolments which then results in less
funding etc.
It also seems like many people can make money off the test which really makes
you question whether the test is really being used most beneficially for the
students or for the outside sources involved such as companies who make pre
testing revision books.
